Possibility of More 2012 Viral?

As you may or may not know, I have been participating in the contest for Post-2012 Leader, which has been running for a few weeks now. Well today they posted the last round of tests. Upon completion, you receive a PDF file of an origami pyramid. Now, this is either a congratulatory door prize, or, it’s something more.

On the website for the IHC, there is a section titled “Initiatives” that discusses all possible ways of survival. Could be space. Could be underground. Wherever destruction is NOT happening. One of those initiatives is called “Cultural and Historical Analysis”. From there, go to the Mayan and Native American group.

First, read the article dated January 25th, 2009. It discusses four codes in Mayan civilization that are used to predict the date of 12/21/2012 based on countless charts that can be found by clicking a link on the right of the IHC page. ASTRONOMY IN THE CODICES

Now, based off of my cool little pyramid, I believe those codecs are as follows:

Now, click the news article dated January 29th, 2009. There you will see a video from IHC anthropologist Dr. Joshua H. Corrigan, PhD. He discusses the finding of a 5th codec. A remarkable find indeed.

So, I flip the pyramid over, and tada!

Does that make me an anthropologist now?

So, we have a big step in what could be something to keep us busy. Or, I’ve spent a ton of time looking for clues on a piece of 8 cent paper. Join the forum and help in the fun!

And remember, the tests may be over in the contest, but I can bring on advocates until September 8th by clicking here.

Thanks!

Fused Film News: Last Week in Review

The Big Stuff

A better week in the land of film news and some TV, first off, Fused Film has a new Associate Editor, Will Melton, joins the family (read More on him here). Secondly, sorry this post is a little late from us, it has been a hectic weekend and I have been ill. Anyway, as mentioned there was some juicy stories from all around ranging from casting news, to the remake station opening up again. These 3 below were our favorite from the whole week:

Todd McFarlane Updates New Spawn Film?

Todd McFarlane, via his Twitter recently announced that he is currently writing a new Spawn film. He says:

“I’ve officially begun writing the Spawn screenplay. The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years. Will continue to update. The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a stand alone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary. The tone of this Spawn movie will be for an older audience. Like the film Departed.”

This movie will mark the second live-action adaptation of this highly influential Image comic. McFarlane is the creator of the Image comic character. He produced the 1997 film that starred Michael Jai White. [Read Full Article Here]

Third Batman Film to be Completely Shot in IMAX

Batman is always big news so this one made the list. So there still seems to be talk about the sequel to the Dark Knight, especially as buzz for Nolan’s Inception is beginning to build and that’s where the guys over at AICN say that Nolan and the WB are already making plans on the style of the next film.

Ain’t It Cool News has reportedly heard a rumor that Nolan and Warner Bros. are going to follow-up The Dark Knight with a third film and that it will be shot entirely in IMAX format.

UFC’s Quinton Jackson to play B. A. Baracus in A-Team Movie?

Best rumor in a while. Thing is it was debunked a few days later. I actually liked the casting pick.

There has been much deliberation on who will be cast as B.A. Baracus in Joe Carnahan’s A-Team remake for the big screen. The only official casting announcements so far is Liam Neeson who will be playing John “Hannibal” Smith and The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper, who will be playing Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck. Minor Stories to Read

Besides the Big 3, there was a massive amount of good minor stuff throughout the week.

Does A New Line of Jurassic Park Toys Mean Anything for Its Film Future?

I mean think about it. They are already rebooting everything else why not? Or continue where we left off. There is a lot of stories you could tell.

Hancock 2 Secures Writers for Sequel

Just a week after Peter Berg mentioned he’d like to make a sequel for Hancock, some more developments have come out and this time its 2 writers set to pen the picture for Columbia. Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to pen Hancock 2, the sequel to the Will Smith anti-hero, superhero flick, which grossed $624 million worldwide [Read Full Article Here]

Spielberg to Adapt Another Crichton Novel Called Pirate Latitudes

Just days after I wrote about how there should be some consideration on bringing back Jurassic Park there lands some news on Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton.
According to USA Today, Spielberg is currently putting together a film based on the novel Pirate Latitudes from the late author, Michael Crichton. Back in April it was annouced that Crichton had [Read Full Article Here]

You Know What Would Kick-Ass?

My name is Cristian and I am one of the new Contributing writers here at Movieviral.com. My two biggest passions in life are comics and cinema, so for my first article, I’m going to write about one of last years critically acclaimed comics and upcoming movie, Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass.

For those of you who don’t know, Kick-Ass is about high school student, David Lizewski, a nerdy comic book fan who one day puts on a costume and fight crimes like all his comic book heroes.

As they were working with the comic, Mark Millar and artist John Romita Jr. worked closely with Director Matthew Vaughn (Layercake, Stardust) on a movie adaptation of the comic. Earlier this summer at Comic-Con San Diego, footage from the movie was showed for the first time. The people who saw the footage were very impressed, and it even got standing ovations.

As a way to promote the comic on the internet before the release of the first issue in early 2008, a Myspace site was set up for a “Kick-Ass, a real-life superhero.” On the page, “Kick-Ass” asks for other crime-fighters to contact him and join his group. He also mentions that Mark Millar is making a comic book about him and his adventures. To me that is very smart, because the comic is set in our world not the world of Superheroes. It gives the comic another level of realism.

The most interesting thing on the site though is a video from Youtube. I actually saw the Video before I found the Myspace and I thought it was really awesome. You can watch it below:

Editors Note: Video contains strong language.

The text attached to the video says that the video was taken by a fan with a mobile phone when he helped someone who was getting mugged at a car park outside a supermarket. Kick-Ass also asks other people with footage of him to post a link on his Myspace.

After the Comic was released the viral kind of died out. The blog at the Myspace page hasn’t been updated since February 25th. A shame really, because the Myspace and Youtube video were really cool ways to create an interest for the comic. It certainly woke my interest for the comic, and now when the movie is coming out sometime next year, it wouldn’t take much to create a great viral since the foundation is already there with the Myspace page.

I would love if they started up the viral again. Why not do something like the District 9 viral, but instead of asking for alien sightings ask for superhero sightings. Another cool thing would be to create local superhero teams in different cities and involve the fans by asking them to create their own masked crime-fighter and join the teams. Personally, I would love to create my own character and make my own costume. That’s just some ideas I have to kick start the Kick-Ass viral again. What do you guys think?

Give me your ideas in a comment below, or join the forum and discuss it with me there.

News of the Day: Disney acquires Marvel

For those that have not already heard, it was announced this morning that Disney has purchased Marvel Entertainment for 4 billion dollars.  Head over to SuperHeroHype to look at the press release and updates that are emerging (including a supposed meeting between John Lassiter and Marvel last week).  In addition, CNBC has some reaction from Disney CEO Robert Iger.

This is an absolutely huge story that might forever change some of our favorite superhero properties on film.  I think there are a lot of opportunities that a company that Disney provides for filmmakers, mostly through financial resources.  The question becomes will the creative brain trust at Marvel be compromised due to Disney’s influence.  I’d like to think Disney is smarter than that, and maybe they’re looking to expand their demographics by acquiring more adult-ish oriented properties.

From a viral marketing point of view, I think there is a very good chance we may see the last of viral campaigns with Marvel characters.  I say this is because Disney has little reason to devote resources to a niche specific marketing campaign when they own theme parks, stores, and television stations.  They’re films have always been marketed through traditional means due to their sheer size, and I don’t see that changing now.

What are your thoughts about this?  Does the sound of a Pixar-Marvel animation film just get you giddy with joy?  Or do you feel the portrayal of Marvel characters will be toyed with to meet the family-friendly product Disney seeks?  Leave your comments below.

Back to Work: Viral Marketing in The Office

Like many, I am a huge fan of NBC’s The Office.  Season six of the award winning comedy begins September 17th, and I thought it would be helpful to highlight some of the viral goodies on display for fans that need a fix before the premiere…

More than any other show, The Office gives its audience a variety of content in the weeks between episodes.  I applaud the folks at NBC for their creativity.  They consistently post deleted scenes, webisodes, and addicting games.  More impressive though is the array of viral pages they maintain to keep fans’ minds in Scranton, PA.   Here’s just a sampling of what’s out there:

Websites

Fans can go to the official Dunder Mifflin Paper Company website and experience a realistic taste of the infamous Scranton Branch.  There’s not a whole lot there in the way of content, but I would recommended reading the periodic newsletter that lets fans know what the employees have been up to.  The latest issue gives lists Michael’s “Renaissance Men” and Kelly’s thoughts on the New Moon trailer. It can be found here.

The more interactive site offered is Dunder Mifflin Infinity.  Fans will remember this from the start of season four after the company attempted to establish a presence online.  Similarly, NBC launched the site that allowed users to register as employees and were given access to content in return-primarily games and contests.  Although the push to embrace technology failed in the show, NBC has kept this site going.  Consequently, it’s emerged as a haven for fans anxious to create their own Dunder Mifflin content and interact with Office fanatics.

Finally, my favorite website yet is www.angelaandy.com.  Users quickly learn the wedding themed page is designed and maintained by Dunder Mifflin employee Andy Bernard.  Anxious to share details about his engagement with coworker Angela Martin, Andy explains the story behind their relationship and the details of their planned Thanksgiving Day wedding.  There is even a guestbook that allows visitors to leave notes for the couple (look for message s from Andy’s coworkers!).  Although the relationship fizzled and the wedding never materialized on screen, updates have continued in true “Nard Dog” fashion.

Blogs

Throughout the course of the show, fans of The Office have gradually been introduced to blogs from their favorite characters.  First, Dwight Schrute began his “Schrute Space” blog.  At the end of season three, Creed Bratton’s  “Creed Thoughts” became a reality, followed by Meredith Palmer’s “Sex and the Electric City.” These blogs serve  fans well because it allows them to enjoy memorable but minor characters from the show.  The entries are weird and at times inappropriate, but most importantly, are grounded in the reality of the show.  I don’t know who actually wrote them, but they have captured the characters voice and style without question.  I hope these sites continue to cover more Dunder  Mifflin characters.  Maybe a Darryl Philbin blog from the warehouse is next?

Twitter

The newest addition to the Office viral campaign are twitter pages for the show’s favorite feuding couple, Ryan Howard and Kelly Kapoor.  The two update fairly regularly, and their continual back and forth harken back to some of their classic moments on the show.  In addition, the two recently underwent a lengthy twitter conversation that NBC has posted on their main page.  Neither Ryan or Kelly are intellectually or emotionally deep, and I think the brevity and impulsive nature of tweets are absolutely perfect for these characters.  Follow them @iamkellyfierce and @veRY_Angelic.

So that’s just a taste of what is out there for all you Office fans.  As I said before, I think NBC has done a terrific job with providing lots of additional content to their fans.  It’s the best viral campaign for a television show I’ve seen yet, and I think it helps reinforce the unwaveringly loyal following the show has established.  What do you think?  For fans, do these virals get you more excited for the show?  Or do you have other opinions?  Let us know!

What If: The Blade Runner Viral

It has been a slow weekend here at MovieViral, and there has been nothing to report on. But don’t worry! We’ve still got some interesting projects in the pipeline!

Between reading Alex’s Article on 5 films that should go viral and a post on the forum by cynic710 about all-time movies that deserved a viral campaign, I decided to put my creative hat on and look through the mists of time. Over the next few months, I’m going to look at old movies and try to devise a viral campaign for them.

For the first in the series, I’m choosing my favorite sci-fi film: Blade Runner

Blade Runner hit the cinema screens back in 1982 and dazzled audiences with it’s futuristic neon-lit vision of the future. However, the film did not dazzle the studio, going over budget and receiving bad feedback during test-screenings. Even the author Philip K. Dick, who wrote the book upon which blade runner is based, disowned the film after reading an early draft of the script. This criticism caused the film and script to go under the knife, and it was re-cut to make it more audience friendly.

In hindsight, it is easy to see that the film was both ahead of it’s time and an update on the classic film noir genre. A bona-fide classic, it has won it’s place in many publications “top ten greatest films” list and is regarded to be one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time.

So the film certainly has the credentials to be considered as all-time classic movie, but what would the  viral campaign be like if this film, was it to be released in the present day?

Editors Note: The websites contained in this article are meant to be fictional websites. They may or may not be active, and the content of these website have not been checked. You have been warned.

The Interview:

In keeping with the first scene of the film, the first step on the viral campaign would have been interview.

In the same vein as the Iron mans 2 viral site, the Tyrell.com website visitor would have to complete a job application in order to be accessed by the Tyrell corporation. These questions would mainly consist of questions about past experience and would ask investigative questions to access the candidates eye for detail, inquisitive nature and compassionate and moral view points. This would hint towards the injected past memories of the replicants and also the emotions and viewpoints that are displayed by the replicate’s fugitive leader Roy awareness of death, and Tyrell’s secretary Rachel development of emotions towards the end of the end of the film.

The Questionnaire:

Some time after the form has been submitted, successful applicants would then be sent a link to website Voight-Kampff.com where there would be a brief questionnaire to fill in. The questions would be similar to those asked during the Blade Runner’s interviews of suspected Replicants. The questions would  start with the typical likes and dislikes questions, and then take a more moral viewpoint to catch out suspected replicants. At this stage the user would be split in to one of two groups – The Blade Runners or The Replicants.

Blade runners first stage:

After successful completion of the questionnaire, those that answered in a morally correct way would then be sent to nexus6.com, an information site that where the blade runner would be able to look at past models and familiarise themselves with the current line-up. Here they would learn about the combat, pleasure and worker models.

Replicants first stage:

The Replicants page, nexustrack.com, would be similar to the Blade Runner’s page, but would also show their current locations and allow them to track all known Replicants. The Replicants would see an alternative view of what the nexus-series, allowing the user to gather information  and select the right replicants for upcoming assignments.

Blade Runners second stage:

Users will go to Kowalskisphotos.com and see several photos that have been developed. Similar to the photo tracking scene in he film. Encouraged to look for clues in the photos by using the scan and magnifying technique used in the film, Runners would be rewarded with set photos such as the Tyrell building, Hassan’s pet shop and police spiners

Replicants second stage:

Replicants will be sent to Jftoys.com which will allow the user to build toys and robots left around the “workshop.” J. F. Sebastian will then rate the toy you have created and if he is pleased with the creation, he will reward the user with bios of Dekker, Tyrell and Rachel. The bio for Rachel would portray her as Tyrell’s secretary and possible love interest, but to keep the reveal in-tact, will not inform the user of her replicants background.

Blade Runners last stage:

Blade Runners will go to their last page, Taffysgirls.com, where they will see the results of Voight-kampff tests as well photos of the applicant. After looking through the bios they will have to select those that should be scrutinised further using the knowledge they have learned from the nexus 6 page. If they identify all the Replicants correctly, they would be able to click on a link and see the preview of the trailer before anyone else.

Replicants last stage:

Replicants would be directed to dekkardsretirementhome.com. There the Replicants will be expected to evade the Blade Runners by using their alternative knowledge gained stage one and putting it into practice. Test would include a new Voight-kampff test which they will this time have to path, and selecting the right Replicants to infiltrate the right scenario and not raise any suspicions. If they pass these tests, they will see an alternative trailer.

I really like the idea of the “alternative” sides to a film. Both District 9’s “Humans Only” vs. alien visitors and The Dark Knight’s Harvey Dent vs. the Joker’s “army” used similar ideas and in the end, you follow both sides and get to see the film from different perspectives.

I enjoyed this “what if” article, and hope to produce some more. If you can think of any films that would have benefited from a viral campaign, post them in the comments below.

Your TV show needs you! FOX Asks Fans to Campaign for GLEE

New FOX show GLEE has just launched a new competition asking fans to create their own viral campaign.

Using your social networks built through Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace, FOX will reward you every time you mention their new show during your status updates. By communicating through your own personal accounts you will in fact be creating buzz for the show. Smart idea! The chance to meet the cast of the GLEE is up for grabs as well as autographed photos, hats and shirts.

We’ve already seen that Facebook and MySpace have become standard outlets for new information on movies, tv, and music, but this new competition also shows us that companies are taking a bigger interest in the buzz a twitter account can create. Iron Man 2 is perhaps the first, with director Jon Faverou posting pictures of the set and characters from time to time through his own account.

Is this a bold move by the FOX network to bring viral marketing to a new interaction level? It’s certainly a fresh idea in terms of personal participation. You will be part of the campaign, spreading the word that is glee! How do you feel using your own network to create a viral for your favorite TV show or film?

You can go to fox.com/gleek to enter. Season 1 of GLEE premieres September 9th at 9/8c. You can watch the pilot and select clips at Hulu.

New Surrogates Pics and Music Video

Not much news lately for Surrogates, but yesterday we got a few new photos and a music video that features some footage from the sci-fi film. Our friends at First Showing posted the new pics yesterday, and Executive Editor Alex was not impressed. I’ve heard a lot people being kind of creeped out by the footage and imagery, but I’m fascinated by the concept and everything I’ve seen. Here are the new pics:

Surrogates

Surrogates

MySpace has also posted a music video of Breaking Benjamin’s “I Will Not Bow”, their single that is featured in the film. The music video includes clips from the film, including some never before seen footage. Nothing spoilerish, though it’s hard to tell, really. Check out the video below:

So what do you think of everything you’ve seen so far from Surrogates? Check out the trailer, and let us know what you think. Again, I’m really excited for the film, but I know quite a few people who aren’t. The viral campaign has been a dud, with only one viral site that hasn’t even been updated, and Disney missed a big oppurtunity at Comic-Con to do something. See our Surrogates page for more info on the film and it’s viral campaign.

Based off the successful graphic novel, Surrogates is set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop is forced to leave his home for the first time in years to investigate the murders of others’ surrogates. The film opens nationwide on September 25th.
