Friday was possibly the last dead drop for the 2012 conspiracy game, and we now have the coded message and its deciphered version for you. We already knew this would probably be the last drop because they correlated with Jackson Curtis’ book tour, and there are no more dates on the tour. Now we can be pretty sure because the message talks about how they know someone is breaching their system, and the source from Corruption Theory says he probably won’t be able to do this anymore.


It’s hard to know what to make of all this. The schematics we’ve been getting haven’t been that revealing, and the info on the selection process seems to be the only conspiracy-like intel we’ve gotten, yet that’s been extremely vague. I’m still trying to figure out of the connection between the Farewell Atlantis book and this conspiracy is simply for the game, or if there’s more to it. We’ll have to wait and see (like usual).

Sherlock Holmes: The Game Is Afoot!

It seems Warner Bros. has decided to reignite the Sherlock Holmes viral campaign, sending out a new email (or telegraph, rather) earlier today. The email reads:

DETECTIVE

London seethes with crime — STOP — find your partner upon whom you will rely — STOP — evidence secured for your advance assessment — STOP — the game is afoot — STOP — make all haste to 221B now STOP CLICK HERE

The “CLICK HERE” takes you to 221B.sh, an interesting website that seems to be the new center of the game. It allows you to connect with Facebook, and both invite and play with your friends. I’m guessing they’ll send clues over Facebook mail, and I’m sure we’ll be getting more emails. I’m interested by this viral, and excited for the film, so I hope Warner Bros. takes it serious.Screen shot 2009-10-30 at 4.46.56 PM

On a side note, I thought that the .SH domain choice was interesting. I can almost guarantee they’re going for SH – Sherlock Holmes, but in reality it’s the official domain for The Island of Saint Helena (but anyone can by a .SH domain, to my knowledge).

That’s really it. I don’t think the game has officially started, because after you sign up you get the message “information of great use to you in your search will be arriving shortly,” so I think there will be a Facebook message that will really start this game up. We’ll keep you posted.

Latest Avatar Trailer is a Game Changer

After playing in theaters for almost a week, the second Avatar trailer has hit the web via Yahoo! Movies. It is epic. It is fantastic. It is one of the best trailers I have ever seen. If you thought Avatar Day was a dud, you will feel reinvigorated. If you were excited after seeing the first teaser, this will make you even more so. I’m not going to break down each scene, because at three and a half minutes, there is a lot to take in. I suggest you experience it for yourselves. I am though going to offer five things I know, and five I don’t know about where we stand now with Avatar. But first, here’s the trailer:






What I Know



I know the viral for this just has just gotten a lot more interesting. Avtr.com makes a lot more sense in light of what’s now been released regarding the plot. All the entries and images on the site can been connected to the footage in the trailer. We even see more of Colonel Quaritch, who is the military man greeting visitors to the AVTR main page. Although the official site has updated (finally) with wallpapers and images, there’s been no updates to the viral. I expect that to change big time in the next couple weeks, and am curious to see what more we have to learn about the AVTR Project.


I know Avatar’s plot is by no means original.  The film is being touted as innovative in many respects, but story is not one of them.  By now, I’m sure most have heard about claims earlier this week that James Cameron’s story and a novella by Poul Anderson are all too similar. The fact is the story reflects many films over the past several years. I even see similarities between Avatar and District 9.  When it comes down to it though, it’s not a big deal.  Film plots are so often about building upon ideas and inspirations of others, and I am curious to see where Cameron decides to take his.


I know I haven’t been this excited for a winter film release since 2005. That was the year in which a similarly epic film, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, came out. Avatar certainly has the same talent and expectations behind it, and I am optimistic it can be a bigger box office hit than Kong was, and even a better movie.


I know this trailer is going to change people’s minds. A lot of them. I stated weeks ago on our ViralCast that the only way for Fox to recapture the hype of the film was to not be afraid to give fans more content. I know some will argue that this trailer spoils the film, but I think this is a stellar move. I’ve read reactions across the net of those who were disappointed with the teaser but have now thrown their support behind the film.  lus, with positive word of mouth and more marketing about to kick in, seats on the bandwagon are going to go fast.


With that said, I know I don’t want to see any more footage. This point is not meant to contradict the one I just made, but additional trailers and clips are not necessary anymore. The studio finally has the support and buzz they sought with Avatar Day. Don’t go the Watchmen route and release 15 film clips a week before the release. If Fox is smart, they will commit to building up the viral knowing they have a greater fan base. And when Thanksgiving rolls around, start flooding the airwaves with television spots. You cannot possibly top this trailer, so don’t even try.



What I Don’t Know



I don’t know what is next. I could only hope that this newfound momentum translates into a deeper viral. How about delving into who Jake Scully is? Or more about Colonel Quaritch? The Avatar marketing blitz is hard to predict.  Will they release more clips?  Another trailer?  The buzz is going to grow over the coming weeks, and I’m curious to see what Fox does now that they have the hype on their side again.


I don’t know how much money this film will make. Avatar will clearly be Cameron’s most frontloaded release, and will yield his largest opening weekend to date. Still, the film is not mainstream enough to justify Dark Knight expectations, nor will it have Titanic’s staying power (and no film ever will). At this point, I would guess a $70 million opening weekend, and a $275 million domestic run. Is that a financial success for a film this big? What is?


I don’t know if this film will see Oscars come February. I mean serious Oscars, like Cameron is accustomed to. The technical awards I expect, and a race between Avatar, District 9, and Transformers for best visual effects would be intriguing to follow. But can this film nab one of the ten Best Picture nominations? Is there anyone in this ensemble cast that strikes you as Oscar worthy? I would guess not, but it’s something to consider as awards season approaches.


I don’t know if I want to see this in 3D. I understand it sounds crazy, but it’s my only real concern. Avatar promises visuals we’ve never seen, and a theater experience we’ve never had. I can’t remember a film being this visually overwhelming since Return of the King, but I would have the same reservations about that as well.  Three hours with funky glasses on, adjusting to a new medium may prove to be a distraction for some.  In the end, I will give the benefit of the doubt to the filmmakers. This is after all what Avatar was made for.


And finally, I don’t know…what you think!  This trailer should breed discussion from those on both sides of the Avatar fence. Is anyone matching my excitement? Or are the dissenters prepping victory speeches for when this whole thing turns out to suck? Feel free to post your thoughts below. I will keep everyone informed on Avatar news as it becomes available.

The Office Webisode “Subtle Sexuality” Now Online Plus New Website

As we mentioned last week, The Office is bringing back their wildly popular webisodes, and this time we get an extra treat in the form of a music video. This series is about Erin, Kelly, Ryan, and Andy from Dunder Mifflin creating a group called Subtle Sexuality and making a music video called “Male Prima Donna”. The three episodes including the music video itself debuted today. Take a look at the hilarious music video below:





Erin is easily my favorite in the video, though you can’t beat Ryan’s eye liner. The group is technically only Kelly and Erin, with the guys just being guests. They even have their own website, so check it out to see more about the group, including tour dates (which are just open mics around Scranton). Obviously Kelly is the star of the group and so far Erin seems cool with that. Catch the entire series at NBC.com. The Box: You Are The Experiment

An interesting website popped up for the upcoming film The Box, which you’ve probably seen ads for on TV. The basic premise: A box is brought to a couple’s house and inside is button, and if they push the button a random person in the world they don’t know will die. In return the couple will receive a payment to the sound of $1 million.Screen shot 2009-10-29 at 5.46.45 PM

The website, youaretheexperiment.com, seems completely unrelated to the film from what I’ve gathered from the commercials (albeit not a very good source). But obviously this will all play a role in the film. The site really gets me excited about the film, which I wasn’t too excited about before. Make sure you check out the trailer if you haven’t seen it yet.

The “Exhibits” are quite interesting. Each one plays a different video, all about NASA’s Viking program which took place in the mid 70′s. I really don’t know how to explain the videos, so check them out. Each of the videos has it’s own uniqueness, but they’re all very mysterious.

It’s interesting to note that the official website for The Box, and all of the trailers have included the phrase “You are the experiment,” so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays a part in the movie. The Box opens November 6th.

V Peace Ambassador Program

Because Hollywood can’t keep remakes to just movies, next week the series “V” debuts on ABC. The new series, based off the 1983 miniseries and subsequent TV show, is about aliens (called “Visitors”)who arrive to help mankind, but in reality have alterior motives.


To promote the series, ABC.com has created a “Peace Ambassador Program”. What you get by signing up is breaking news about the Visitors. There are two videos from the Visitors themselves talking about the program, so check it out below:




Normally I wouldn’t even bother to mention something like this, since it seems to be a very simple online marketing plan. However, there is some speculation in our forum and on Unfiction that this might turn into a viral campaign or ARG. ABC has done it before with LOST, so it is possible, especially since both the series and the Peace Ambassador Program look to have a LOST-ish feel to it.

An interesting website that calls itself ARG Dead Drop is our source of information this time. Looks to be the same Farewell Atlantis code we’ve seen before. We still haven’t deciphered it yet, so I’ll post an update when we get it. Apparently we’ll be using Apple computers in the future. The first schematics image is of the living quarters, which look pretty nice. The second is of a mountain side dock platform, presumably for the vessel itself, and the third is of some windows on the ship. While none of the images themselves are terribly interesting, the name of the last one did perk my ears. “AmericanArkWindows” confirms that they call it an Ark in the story, and that there are may be multiple vessels, as this one is designated as American. We’ve already figured out that the whole conspiracy revolves around these modern Arks and their seemingly unethical determinations as to who gets on board. One of the new trailers even pretty much lays it out there for you.

Once again, this is a harder code to decipher, but thanks to Lightning257 in our forum, we have our key for cracking it. Remember when I told you that the first chapter of Farewell Atlantis would come into play somehow? Well, now’s the time. In an extremely tedious cipher that I have not had the luxury of figuring out myself, you actually use the text within the book’s first chapter.


Go to the novel’s website and click the button that lets you read the chapter. Each of the 4 number combinations in the message are code for one letter. The first number is the paragraph, the second is the line, the third is the word, and the fourth is the letter. So for the code “3-6-10-1″, you go to the third paragraph, then the sixth line of that paragraph, then the tenth word of that line, then the first letter of that word. Like I said, tedious. We have deciphered part of the code, but you figure out the entire code, let us know. So far it’s nothing exciting, but it’s only the first few lines. We’ll update this story once we get the decoded message.

Three New 2012 TV Teasers

2012, hmmm. More than any other film this year that I can think of 2012 seems to be polarising opinion. I’m torn myself, because on the one hand, it stars an all time favourite actor of mine, but on the other hand, well, there’s a car driving off of plane! Less said about that the better.


My interest is gradually picking up though, not because of the the new footage we are seeing, but because of the so far excellent viral campaign they are running at the moment, which has gone into overdrive in the last week or so. It’s certainly kept Dan and Scott busy!


Sony Pictures have released 3 new TV spots for the film, due to be released in 2 weeks, and they are definitely worth watching for some previously unseen footage. The more I see of this film the more I think this is going to be a “bang for your buck” movie, and other than the lackluster Transformers sequel, i think we have been missing this kind of film in the 2009 release schedule.
