Tron Legacy – Video Game

What do you get when you take a film that’s based on real life video games and make it a video game?

A video game!

That’s exactly what you’ll get with the release of Tron. Notice it’s missing the “Legacy” part. Perhaps it’s not solely based on the movie. Maybe a little bit of back story thrown in. Maybe it has nothing to do with the new film, and it’s just a cool looking game called Tron.

Take a look at the teaser that Slashfilm posted:

We’ll have to watch the Video Game Awards on Spike which will air on December 12th to see how much more we’re to see of this game. And perhaps a new view of the movie?

Tron Legacy is set for release in December of 2010

Star Trek: The Art of the Film” is a lavishly illustrated celebration of that new vision, tracing the evolution of the movie’s look through a stunning array of previously unseen pre-production paintings, concept sketches, costume and set designs, unit photography and final frames. Written by New York Times-bestselling author Mark Cotta Vaz in close co-operation with the film’s production team, and including a Foreword by J.J. Abrams, this is the essential companion to the film.

Iron Man 2: Stark’s ‘Tude Ain’t Goin’ Anywhere

Iron Man 2 is starting to slowly but surely pick up some steam as we move forward to the May 7th, 2010 release. We already had the viral site start (and go nowhere, though hopefully that changes after we get a teaser, possibly as early as next month), we’ve seen some pictures of the new baddies and we’ve seen some magazine covers tease us.

Now, we have another magazine with a tasty little headline for us:

Iron Man 2

Make anyone else excited? Good to see some coverage of Iron Man to take us away from the bombardment of Avatar news. Personally, I can’t wait for a teaser (and more) from this movie. So what do you think? Are you looking forward to Iron Man 2? Regard it indifferently? Do you not care at all? Let us know in the comments!

Iron Man 2 hits theaters everywhere on May 7th, 2010. Check out our Iron Man 2 Page for more information on the viral campaign and the film itself.

Avatar: Ten Featurettes in the Interactive Trailer

Fox continues their huge Avatar push with a new ‘interactive trailer’, which allows you to jump from the trailer to the featurette during important points. These featurettes are designed to help you get a better understanding of the creatures and characters within Avatar. You can get see the featurettes on Avatar’s website.

Here are some examples:

So what do you think about the featurettes? What do you think about Avatar in general? Is it living up to the hype, or will it bomb at the box office when it opens on December 18th? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

When Viral Strikes! (Too Soon)

A while back, I wrote about how the start of a film, meant the end of a perfectly good viral. One can look at it as a tough day. It’s like making a good friend, and then that friend just up and leaves you. Never to be heard from again. But what happens when you meet someone new, and they are so great, but then……… poof! It’s like they impressed you at the start just to become friends. And then what……

Nothing.

This is the case with some virals that we have discussed in the past. There are a couple of ways that we’ve seen a viral try to “be our friend” in the sense that they seem to either have potential, or just wow the hell out of you at the start. These cool kids of the viral world seem to go nowhere though. Almost like the cool kids of high school.

Let’s go back to Surrogates. It’s a science fiction movie. How hard can the viral be.

(Bruce Willis says “It’s not tough. I am”)

At first, we had chooseyoursurrogate.com. This site had a ton of potential being that it was the premise of the film. You can have a robotic you? And you can have your face planted on a sky diver and send the video to your friends? And to top it all off, I can win the big game? What’s not to like! Sign me up!!!

Then, VSI Labs created a Twitter account, that was either found too early, or, set up wrong to begin with. All it did was tweet about stuff I just read five minutes before it on Google news. Yes, Honda makes robots. We know. And I want one. And to make it worse, it’s as if they gave up, they combined all sites into one plain movie site. Three cheers for giving it all you got!

Editors Note: Please check out Iain’s “What If” (here and here) for an awesome revamp of said viral.

So that’s an example of a friend who seems like they know what they are doing at first, but come to find out, they don’t even go to your school. Now, let’s take a look at the “New Guy”. This person enters, and all eyes gaze upon them. Could it be? Someone so perfect standing before me?

This is where Tron Legacy comes in. As reported by both Slashfilm and Firstshowing, this viral started off huge. Most things at Comic-Con involve a banner, or a makeshift protest on the streets of San Diego. Not this one. First, they have the mailers. Tokens and flash drives, and bears. Oh my. Well, no bears, but to start off a viral campaign that strong, was too good to be true. How are you going to top that!

Oh, what’s that, a real scavenger hunt in San Diego? Seriously? And then you are going to follow it up with a replica of Flynn’s Arcade? Come on. That’s far enough. What do you mean you’re going even further? Ok, a real light cycle? Damn you and your cool hair and letter jacket. What’s next, you’re going to move in on my girl?

This just in: Tron Legacy’s viral just took my girl to the movies.

So how in the hell can you top what you did in the matter of weeks. The movie isn’t even set for release until the end of 2010. One can look at it as they have all the time in the world to wow us even more, or, the cynical viral follower can easily forget about the movie until a new trailer is released in god only knows how far from now.

And, for those of you keeping score, yes, these cool kids are both the children of the Disney family down the street. Look at ‘em. They got it all.

Viral Flop Side Notes:

Iron Man 2 – Anyone hear back about an interview with Stark Industries? Not even in the mail room?

The CraziesThe Friendliest Place on the Earth. And the slowest to update.

So how do you feel about the spark of energy and the sudden lack of fuel. Let us know here, or sign up at the forum.

How To Turn a Regular Ad Viral: 11 Creative Billboards

It’s hard to get your brand recognized nowadays with all the advertising noise out in the world, the Internet, and TV. Thus, you need to find a way to separate yourself from the bunch. ARGs and viral campaigns are one way to do that, but you can do it on a much simpler, one time basis. You drive by them everyday, usually not even noticing them, until someone decides to do something a bit interesting. Yes, I’m talking about creative billboards.

The Huffington Post has a list of 11 Billboards that truely stand out, which include the ones for Kill Bill 2 and Law & Order seen below. Check out the article for the other non-entertainment ones.

Kill Bill
Law & Order

The list of course neglects the great District 9 billboards we saw this summer, but nonetheless, these are really cool. We sometimes forget viral is really about getting people to notice and talk about the advertising, and that’s what these billboards do, even if it its for something as boring as insurance.

Avatar: Thanador Chase Clip

Want to see more of 20th Century Fox’s Avatar? Of course you do. Luckily we have a pretty intense action scene of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) being chased by a monster soon after he arrives on Pandora. Check out the 2 1/2 minute clip from IGN (a unit of Fox Interactive Media, Inc) below.

A portion of the clip was included in the Avatar Day footage, so I have to say that the frenetic pace seen here doesn’t translate that well to 3D. I think the slow motion will show much better. What do you think of the clip? Do you think we’re seeing enough of the world of Pandora?

James Cameron’s Avatar opens worldwide December 18th in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. For more information on the film and its viral campaign, check out our Avatar Page.

Avatar News Round-Up

The last few days have brought lots of news bites on James Cameron’s Avatar, so here’s just a few of the ones that caught our eye.

We already know that Ubisoft is making a video game for film, set to be released on December 1st. Well, now we have an iPhone game as well. It’s a full-on RPG that really dives into the world. Check out Destructoid for more details and photos.

60 Minutes on CBS had a segment covering the film last night, which you can watch on their official website. They talk partly about the film and partly about Cameron himself and his career.

Watch CBS News Videos Online

The Wall Street Journal has an article stating that the film’s running time is 150 minutes (2.5 hours) before credits, and almost 30 minutes of the film are not done. Nothing to fear, as the production plans on being done in time.

In my favorite story of the week, we now know that the language used by the Na’vi is a real dialect, thanks to io9. Paul Frommer, a Hollywood linguistic consultant, actually developed an entire language for the Na’vi to speak that is complete with its own grammar and syntax. He’s hoping it will flourish in pop culture like Klingon has. Maybe we’ll see a Na’vi dictionary sometime in the future.

We also have a few new foreign posters thanks to FilmStage, including this one:

Avatar opens December 18th.

First Iron Man 2 Trailer Tied to Sherlock Holmes?

Outside of Comic-Con, the general public has not been able to see much footage from the upcoming Iron Man 2. With the film only 6 months away, we may finally be seeing the first trailer, and it’s conveniently attached to another Robert Downey Jr. project, Sherlock Holmes. Granted, the evidence we have is light, but it does make sense. Check out this tweet the other day from Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man 2:

RT @Ann_Howard: @Jon_Favreau PLEASE tell us the trailer is coming soon – w/Sherlock Holmes, perhaps??

Like I said, it’s thin, but he must have retweeted it for a reason. The timing is right, as Iron Man 2 is just over 5 months after Sherlock Holmes. Plus, Downey Jr. stars in both, and Holmes should be a big hit, perfect for debuting a trailer. The only reasons it might not happen are if the trailer’s not ready in time, or because Warner Bros. is behind Holmes, while Iron Man 2 is made by Marvel Entertainment.

What do you think? Sherlock Holmes opens Christmas Day, and Iron Man 2 opens in May.
