Viral Video of the Week: Avatar Wars

We’ve already shown two great viral videos from this week (see them here and here), so I had to pull from the last two weeks to find this gem below. It’s a video parody that combines Avatar with several other films to show a trailer for a war of real actors against CGI actors. The video is from a comedy website called Black 20 Studios. Pretty clever stuff. Check it out:

And here’s our honorary video of the week, “Let’s Enhance” by YouTube user dunk3d.

Viral Video of the Week is a regular feature on MovieViral, where we look for the best movie or TV related viral video. If you find a viral video that is better than these, let us know in the comments below!

Sherlock Holmes Review: An Homage To The Character We Know And Love

As a casual fan of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novel series, I was very excited to see the character realized on screen. I’ve never really had any interest in the previous television shows and movies based on Holmes, possibly because they looked a bit stiff, and frankly, old. Granted, telling a story set in late 19th century London lends itself to such stiffness, but Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes proves you can break away from the norm.

The film starts with Holmes and his best friend and colleague Dr. Watson (Jude Law) working their last case together before Watson becomes engaged to marry (much to Holmes’ chagrin). They find Lord Blackwood, who is sacrificing women as part of the black magic he’s performing. Months later, Blackwood is hung, but seemingly comes back from the dead, looking to take over a secret society and take over the world using his magic. Only Holmes and Watson can stop him, with a little help from Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), whose boss and history with Holmes are just as mysterious as the case.

One of my biggest concerns about the film after seeing the trailers was how accurate the film would be to the Holmes universe. Those who know Ritchie’s work (Snatch, Rocknrolla, to name a few) knows he has a very unique style of filmmaking, one that is very visceral and cutting edge. The stark contrast of classic England and his style work perfectly for the film, truly bringing to life Holmes and the world he lives in. The film seems to be very accurate to the time and Holmes’ world. The landlady, street address, and many characters (Adler, Inspector Lestrade) are the same, and Holmes is portrayed with neurotic perfection by Robert Downey Jr.

Although the film is action-packed, it is also very intelligent, which is a bit surprising given that there are three writers. Usually that many cooks spoil the pot, but not here. Holmes is a genius, and the story unfolds just as brilliantly. He sees everything and instantly comes up with elaborate, yet logical plans. The film is loads of fun to watch, whether it’s the great action scenes or Holmes doing his detective thing.

In fact, my only qualms with Holmes include that things are a little to easy for the title character and his colleagues. He ALWAYS has a plan, even when fighting (which is actually pretty cool, if less dramatic). Even when there’s a serious explosion involving Holmes, Watson, and Adler, we are quickly assured the effects are not deadly. My other issue is that the story meanders a bit, as you may guess with a two hour plus film. It all comes together at the end though, in a very Holmes fashion, thus revealing insequential scenes and shots to be quite important to the mystery as a whole.

I’d say the thickness of the accents were a concern, as I didn’t catch a few lines here and there, but I guess it just comes with the territory. Thanks to a witty ending that has a very smart and exciting (for fans anyway) reveal, it’s safe to say the filmmakers were planning on turning this into a franchise. Personally, I hope they do, because I would love to see more.

Final Review: B+

Feedback: What Did You Think of Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man 2 Trailer?

Yesterday Sherlock Holmes opened nationwide. We’ll have our review later today, but what really matters is what YOU thought of the film. For those of you who followed the viral (mainly the Facebook game), how did it tie into the film?

Also, what did you think of the Iron Man 2 trailer? Sure, it’s nice to see it at home, but you get the full impact when seeing it on the big screen. And don’t just tell us, IM2 director Jon Favreau wants to know your reaction to the trailer. In case you missed it, here’s the trailer below:

The Home Alone Twitter Project

One of my favorite holiday movies of all time is Home Alone. Whenever I hear “Carol of the Bells”, I always think of that movie. Well, for all those other fans out there, now you can follow the plot of Home Alone on Twitter! Yes, that’s right. Thanks to Twitter’s new list feature, you can see tweets from all the main characters in order of how they would appear in the film.

homealone

It’s called the Home Alone Twitter Project, and by following the list, you’ll see tweets from 23 characters in the film, including Kevin McCallister and most of the McCallister family, robbers Harry and Marv, and even Ben Marley, the scary old guy with a shovel. Each character has their own twitter account so they can interact, but reading them all under the list allows you to follow the events in the film from beginning to end in real time (it’s over now, so you can actually read the whole thing).

The narrative uses modern devices such as Twitpic and YouTube, and even uses Internet lingo such as Harry’s “o_O” tweet. It’s really quite brilliant, so check it out for yourself. I’m crossing my fingers in hopes they do Home Alone 2 next year. Thanks to Slashfilm for the heads up.

Merry Christmas from MovieViral!

From all of us at MovieViral, we want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. To help celebrate this festive occasion, here are some holiday movies for your viewing pleasure.

Great 7 Minute Video Shows The Cinema of 2009

Just in time for the holidays and the end of the year, we have a great user-created video that nicely highlights the films from 2009. Cut together with some solid tunes, this uber-music video is definitely worth a nostalgic look:

The video was created by YouTube member Kees van Dijkhuizen, who did a similar video for last year’s movies. Very well done in my opinion; great editing.

What do you think of the video? Did he miss anything?

12 Days of Viral – DAY TWELVE

On the twelfth day of viral, my movie gave to me…..

Public displays

This is it folks. The final piece of MovieViral’s ongoing holiday series. And I saved the best for last. If you want to get people’s attention, then get people to be a part.

If we start with District 9, then you will know that it started at Comic-Con in 2008. Banners were appearing in the halls, the bathrooms, and water fountains all over the place. Right off the bat you have a nice audience participation based off of a website, and of course, these odd posters and banners all over the place. The nice thing about this film, is the fact that it carried out the same style and reasoning behind the banners from Comic-Con right out into the street about a year later.

Tron Legacy went a completely different route with a “scavenger hunt” of sorts. Leading, yet again, Comic-Con (2009) viewers through the streets and alleys of San Diego, looking at posters with blacklights for clues, and eventually leading them to the mecah of all Tron -dom-ness (yes, you can use that), Flynn’s Arcade! This place housed some great old school games, including, but not limited to, the original Tron.

And of course, the jackpot of all finds, the new light bike

Now, if you want to talk participation, there is truly only one film to discuss. The Dark Knight took viral a not only a whole new level, but to a whole new arena of marketing where it reigns king. No other film can close to the participation that film saw. Hell, I’m not even going to call it participation. We’ll call it dedication. You have people lining the streets in Joker makeup. You have people yelling out their believe for Harvey Dent. You even had newscasters wearing the pins!

This was phones is cakes, numbers in the sky, makeup, suits, defaced trailers, and real life bat signals. This was a campaign that will have others knock down the rest by a few notches for years to come. And I bet when it too gets knocked down, we’ll have the scoop on what did it.

I hope you enjoyed the 12 Days of Viral series, and from all of us at MovieViral, have safe, fun, and Happy Holidays!

DC Entertainment’s Film Strategy To Be Revealed Next Month

We’ve talked many times on this site, including in our last podcast, about how Warner Bros needs to get their act together in regards to their movies based on DC Comics. Marvel Studios was created for the specific purpose of creating a cohesive film universe for the comic book company’s properties (outside of Spider-man and X-Men, already controlled by Sony and 20th Century Fox, respectively). The results have been spectacular, with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk already getting positive responses. In September, we reported that Warner Bros. had created a new subdivision, titled DC Entertainment, with the sole purpose of recreating Marvel’s model. As of yet, nothing has come of that new arrangement, and with the new Batman series the only thing going for them, the pressure is on to start making things happen.

Well, thanks to Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin, we know that DC Entertainment does have something in the works. Check out this blurb from MTV summarizing a Collider interview with Lin about the now-defunct Justice League movie he’s been attached to:

“[They're] unveiling their DC strategy in January so you’ll hear more about that and they’ll speak about that in the new year,” Lin said of the WB’s plans. “[It] seems like they’re building to Justice League instead of going with the team movie first and doing individual movies after that.”

So, it looks like Warner Bros. is pulling straight from the Marvel Studios playbook. Just as Iron Man, Captain America, and others are leading up to the Avengers movie, WB will release individual movies first, then have them group up for Justice League. Smart idea. The question is, who will be in the League? Obviously Green Lantern has to be on the list, as that film is already in development. While there is talk of other characters getting their own movies (i.e. Flash and Wonder Woman), whether Batman himself joins is still up in the air. If WB does decide to use the Dark Knight, will they tie it into their already huge franchise, or just get someone else to do it and have it be separate. We’ll have to wait and find out.

If you’re wondering about Superman, I think it’s a sure bet he’ll be in the Justice League movie. They need that big name to sell it, especially if they aren’t able to work in Batman. Plus, whenever they finally make a new Superman movie, it will most likely start from scratch, so they can do whatever they want to make it work. Also, check out the Collider article for more on Wonder Woman.

Are you excited to hear about Warner Bros’ plans for the DC film universe?

The Boondock Saints: 10 Year Anniversary

They say the best form of viral is word of mouth. Long before money was spent on creating campaigns and websites, the best way to get people to know about your movie was to make a movie that people wanted to know about. A film that people wanted to talk about. A film that people WANTED to tell their friends about. A film that earned the title of a cult classic.

10 years ago, a film did just that: The Boondock Saints.

Troy Duffy’s film, about two brothers who need to clean up the streets of Boston in such a righteous way that it’s far from frowned upon, did just that. A film praised (no pun intended) for its action, its comedy, its writing, and its sheer visual greatness, cleaned up the town known as “old viral” and became a film that many know and love. The sequel, where you can read my review here, continues the story in a way that all fans wanted.

Just like the word of mouth that made the first film what it was, and helped the second film make it from limited to nationwide viewing, the Saints are looking to get you to talk the talk and get some more word of their spiritual journey out in celebration of a milestone event.

Eventful, the same site that helped spread the word for Paranormal Activity, is being used to spread the “gospel” of the MacManus’ brothers in an effort to bring the original film back to the big screen for its ten year anniversary. Those of you unfamiliar with Eventful, it’s simple. Give them the zip code you are in, that counts as a demand/request, and then, the word of mouth kicks in when you tell your friends. It’s simple.

So there you have it. If you want to see a great film, then see The Boondock Saints. If you want to see a great film on the big screen, then get your rope, because you never know when you’ll need it, and click the link below and start demanding!

And, to follow tradition of of the viral we follow, here’s some lessons straight from the Saints themselves.
