San Francisco, CA – Writer/director Jason Ragosta and veteran producer Rebecca Ahn have joined forces with the acclaimed Bay Area-based practical effects team Pandora FX to launch a new IndieGoGo campaign aimed at raising funding for what will be one of the scariest and most moving short films of the year: BOY IN THE DARK.

Based on memories and experiences from Ragosta’s own childhood, the film’s young protagonist Jake faces night terrors that torment him from the darkness, where he must learn to overcome his fear and find the courage to stand up to the real-life bullies who terrorize him at school during the day. In the end, it’s the memory of his recently passed mother, and the monster he creates in her honor, that give Jake the strength to face his fears.

Filmed in the iconic San Francisco Bay Area, BOY IN THE DARK will be a rare kind of film, combining evocative and dramatic storytelling with the visceral suspense customary in horror films – a unique genre combination not often seen. Naturally, the effects will be expertly handled by the seasoned hands of the team at Pandora FX, led by Margaret Caragan and her more than a decade of experience in the field. Nearly every single creature, bruise and blood effect will be executed practically with prosthetics and makeup, live on set, rather than added digitally in post-production, to give both actors and audience alike a more authentic and palpable cinematic experience.

The now live BOY IN THE DARK IndieGoGo campaign gives a sneak peek into the team and inspirations behind the film, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the practical special fx, hand-drawn artwork and other unique elements via daily updates on the campaign and Facebook pages. Fans and donors are encouraged to share their own experiences, monster drawings, and comment to become an integral part of the film’s production… and ultimately, success!

BOY IN THE DARK  has already sparked hundreds of followers on social media pages. Even before raising a dime, the film has begun making waves and earning praise from eager fans, such as “Great looking designs!” and “Wow you have a dark imagination. Love your work. Can’t wait to see the finished product.”
