ALTERNATIVE SPIDER MAN

THE WEIRDEST ALTERNATE UNIVERSE SPIDER-MEN

 spid

We all jumped for collective fanboy joy when MARVEL did a deal with SONY to finally integrate SPIDER-MAN to the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.

The big introduction will come in next year’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. People are already speculating as to the precise nature the web-crawler’s role will take, even going so far as suggesting his suit might be designed by none other than the great TONY ‘IRON MAN’ STARK!

Well..we shall just have to wait and see. No doubt a trailer will in due course be released and give some hints. Meantime, you have a wealth of mythology to draw upon in the Spider-Man canon. The live action television show starring Nicholas Hammond was upbeat and strangely catchy; but its lack of budget or access to proper Marvel super-villains weakens the whole product and dates it, badly. There are the Raimi movies (1 and 2 are great; 3 is..well..you were warned about it; ‘wicked! awesome! cool!’ it aint).

Marc Webb’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN was actually quite good: romantic, well paced and has a great score, despite being a somewhat forced reboot, prematurely conceived. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is frankly, a giant mess, though its disappointing reception arguably facilitated the new shared universe so all was not lost. Bit like the way BATMAN AND ROBIN ultimately enabled BATMAN BEGINS and the Nolan DARK KNIGHT vision or how 007’s DIE ANOTHER DAY paved the way for CASINO ROYALE and the Daniel Craig era.

In short: plenty of movies to dip into; all with SOME merit. should you wish to kill the spidery pangs. Consider also the wealth of comics and – yes – cartoons. I genuinely love SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS (and make no apologies for that), while the ULTIMATES version is possibly the closest you’ll get to watching a dress rehearsal for Spidey’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic universe next year.

Still not enough for you? Ok. Well fear not. Because those nice people at PureCostumes.com have swung into the rescue with this web of info-graphic on the WEIRDEST iterations of your favorite friendly web-slinger.
