WITH SUZI RUFFELL

MovieViral continues its quest to identify tomorrow’s stars and get some film recommendations en route.

This week: Suzi Ruffell is the name to watch.

Picture Britain’s answer to Kristen Wiig /Amy Schumer/Tina Fey, mixed with a dash of Sally Phillips but still original and refreshing: a charming and witty commentator on all manner of subjects.

Her stand up routine is a stand-out and has been praised by  the Press. I first saw Suzi on a nostalgia show about trends that were acceptable in past decades but are now laughably outdated.

Suzi’s observations of the changes in how culture is treated on television were both poignant and funny. I’m sure her comments have ‘ruffled’ a few feathers. See what I did there? No? OK..I will leave the comedy to Suzi. And I will also pick her brains on life, the universe and most importantly of all – her personal film choices – ideal as we face the weekend!

Here we go…

Q:
What’s your stand up style like, in a nutshell?
A:
I do observational storytelling. A review once said that I am a throwback from the days of confessional comedy, in a good way. I liked that, confessional comedy, it sounds dangerous.
Q:
You remind me of Sally Phillips. You liked the comparison. Got any other comedy heroes? How have they perhaps influenced or inspired you?
A:
I bloody love Sally Philips so I am really happy about that. I grew up loving ‘Smack the Pony’. I love French and Saunders. Amy Schumer, Wander Sykes, Tina Fey. There are so many comedy influences. Alan Carr was my favourite comedian for years before I started comedy, his Tooth Fairy DVD is still one of my favourites. I recently read Amy Poehler’s book which I found hugely inspiring.
Q:
Race and gender are, rightly, an irrelevance nowadays at least in theory when defining a character. But is sexuality different? I argued one could not have a ‘gay James Bond’ because his sexuality is arguably one of his weak spots..am i being thick??
 A:
I would like to see a gay James Bond but I am not sure the world is ready for it, I am not sure how big 007 fans would feel about him going home with Mr Moneypenny.
I think that gay men get a fair amount of air time in TV and film, not enough but some. Lesbians, on the other hand, only ever seem to feature as something sexy for boys to look at or as sports coaches.
I would love to see a lesbian couple in a British rom-com, come on Richard Curtis!
Q:
Name your sexiest movie stars of all time.
A:
Marlene-Dietrich-marlene-dietrich-23183399-1405-1796
I love Marlene Dietrich, so stylish and chic, she also stole Greta Garbo’s girlfriend, I am such a gossip!
Heath Ledger was also so gorgeous and talented. I loved his Joker.
Angelina Jolie (I am such a cliche), as Lara Croft (be still my beating heart)
Leonardo Dicaprio in Titanic which is one of my favourite films, not even in an ironic way, I just love a big love story.
Q:
And your top 5 movies? Or is that impossible? We’ll settle for pure comedy..
  • ET: I love it. As a child I was so jealous of Elliot, I would spend hours throwing a tennis ball into darkness hoping ET would throw it back. I also think the scene where he dressed as a woman is completely hilarious.

  • Pretty Woman: Julia Roberts is one of my favourite actresses.

  • Muppet Christmas Carol: I become completely childlike at Christmas, from the 1st December the decorations are up and Santa jumpers are on. My girlfriend took me to see this a couple of years ago as I had not seen it before. I cannot believe I missed it during my childhood, I just loved it. I felt about 10. So, so good.

  • TITANIC: I always enjoy it.  I know its a bit naff but I love it. It’s sort of a feminist film too. Jack encourages Rose to live the life she wants to live and not what society tells her to do.

  • GOODFELLAS: What a film! It’s shot so brilliantly.  That scene when Henry takes Karen out for the first time. That shot is so cleverly choreographed. If you haven’t seen Goodfellas: stop whatever you are doing and watch it now!  To be honest this list changes constantly. ET and Goodfellas are always in there though.

Q:
Is nostalgia what it used to be? Or have things changed radically with social media? One COULD in theory relive a whole childhood in a lunch hour…
A:
I think we are all getting stabs of nostalgia constantly on buzzfeed and facebook, although I saw an episode of ‘Hey Arnold’ the other day and that really took me back.
Q:
Tell us all you can /want to about upcoming projects. What are the upcoming gigs and which will probably be the toughest / most fun /rewarding etc?
A:
I am constantly gigging all over the country which is great fun. I have a few scripts that I am working on but I couldn’t possibly tell you about them as it might jinx them!
Q:
If you could be in any tv or film franchise what would it be? I thought you’d be great in Dr Who as a companion or even as the next Doctor…
A:
I would love to be the Doctor!
I was a massive fan of the Harry Potter films and books, I would have loved to have been a teacher or a baddie in that.
I would like to be a super hero, not sure which one. Just looks like fun.
Also a gangster film… these are genres not franchises, sorry!
I think I would just quite like to be in a film, full stop.

THANK YOU, SUZI!
