JeruZalem: a new word in found footage shocks and scares!
The Paz Brothers are giving viewers a new scare with JeruZalem: the Biblical equivalent of a Pandora’s Box. What’s interesting about the movie is what it has achieved on a small budget, a kin to BLAIR WITCH and its harnessing of viral video techniques in promotion. Note also that the movie IS being reviewed, already and mostly by the kind of YouTube critics that upload their own videos (usually reserved for the big blockbusting super-hero movie type affairs).
So, one could argue that there is already a kind of ‘cult’ base for the movie’s successful legacy. Is it a great film? You decide that, far be it from me to say. Why so reserved this time? Well, I feel that THIS one kind of revels IN its B Movie qualities. This is by no stretch a pleasant viewing experience. The subject matter is creepy and chilling and the production values are somewhat crude at best.
And YET: What these film-makers have ACHIEVED with those minimised resources? Quite astonishing! It’s bold, given the narrow and necessary limits on the filming techniques. It fits the EPIC PICTURES ethos, too so if you are a ‘fan’ of their output then you will love this movie.
The actors are all charming..something of the JENNIFER LAWRENCE factor here in the actresses’ star power, notably: Yael Grobglas. The location work is also stunning in glimpses. The title, viral marketing and deliberate integration of technologies such as Google glass but fused to a supernatural theme is genuinely innovative. And above all – this is a clever, original and compelling’hook’: OMEN meets INDIANA JONES, via BLAIR WITCH. As a Theology graduate especially, I found plenty to think about here!
JeruZalem is available to download now but we are soon to give away some DVD copies so watch this space, too!
