TRAILER TUESDAY! We look at the latest trailers and what they might reveal about big upcoming releases..
STAR TREK: BEYOND
We see more of the villain (IDRIS ELBA!). Tone seems to reconcile old school Trek philosophy and laughs with weightier themes and intense action..think THE MOTION PICTURE meets WRATH OF KHAN whilst being original in its own way. Looks good!
Everyone hates this. WHY? It’s colorful, sexy, vibrant FUN! The women are adorable as the new Busters. The special effects and visuals are stunning. Yes, it lacks ‘horror’ or ‘weight’. But give it a chance. It’s a reboot! And that’s a reason to give this benefit of the doubt, surely? True: gives FAR too much away. But so do all trailers nowadays.
INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE
The original movie in 1996 invented what we now know as modern movie marketing. The sequel has reinvented that wheel once more, with this new trailer also a kind of introduction / prologue. Goldblum lights up the screen; the new characters seem likable and energetic. The set pieces look outstanding. Bring it on!
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS
This is the TURTLES film you all wanted if you were a fan or nostalgia seeker. We finally get Krang on screen, as well as all the old staples. Look out too for Michael Bay’s usual visual stylings and appetite for mass destruction onscreen, punctuated by Megan Fox looking lovely and ARROW’s Stephen Amell providing extra support as Casey Jones. Harmless FUN. Cowabunga! TURTLE POWER!
Ben Affleck reminds us all that he is a GREAT actor as well as a great Batman in this new thriller come character study. Interestingly, this is PRECISELY what studios WANTED Affleck /Damon’s original GOOD WILL HUNTING to be (in one draft, the CIA wanted to use maths as a weapon..does this sound familiar?). Lots of atmospheric details like eggs being cracked and spectacles being adjusted..
This could be the film that nabs Affleck BOTH his own box office hit as leading man again and some more critical recognition. Yes, it took a while for him to mature as ‘movie star’ (avoid some of his early work) but now, with his skills as Oscar winning writer /director finally merging with his acting style? The sky is the limit and he may well end up realising his destiny as chief of a film studio once JUSTICE LEAGUE and THE BATMAN are done. Watch this space..
Each film will be reviewed here on release.
