Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the ice and fire of Global Climate Change in a new Viral Video: Before the Flood
(and it’s EXCELLENT!)
Global Climate Change: it’s not an easy topic to address. Least of all, for a ‘celebrity’ : many of whom are given stations and platforms beyond their due and proceed to lecture and pontificate in sanctimonious rarefaction. But Leonardo DiCaprio is different. Because the conservation and care for our planet has been his personal passion throughout his life and career.
Whilst Leo is still a young 40 something star, remember he started as a child actor and has been with us for over twenty years. Not once has he wavered or moved on or forgotten his commitment to the environment. It’s a form of stewardship and that is a duty common to all religious and philosophical codes. God, or nature, our shared humanity or all three forces combined MUST lead to one’s conception of a duty to preserve, to the best of one’s abilities, the beauty and creativity of the natural world.
So, whilst it is fair to say that global climate change is a divisive issue and that one can indeed argue against it being weaponized as a tax premise /economic block, you surely cannot dispute or deny our common contract to adore and preserve our natural world? And it is THAT principle which lies at the very heart of Before The Flood.
This is an appreciation of natural beauty and a warning about the dangers that genuinely face our planet. At the same time, the picture functions as edu-tainment. We get a tour of politics, science, nature, history and aesthetics and morality. There are epic shots of landscapes inaccessible to many. And some genuinely funny satirical quips. Yes, Leo anticipates the objections to his use of a yacht or jet and quite self deprecatingly and with an affably aware embrace of the absurdities, he acknowledges that problem and the film moves back to its pervasive purpose.
Literate, warm of heart, insightful, enlightening and yes – FUN – I recommend Before The Flood in the strongest terms possible, to one and all. It’s a tribute to the genuine passion of Leonardo DiCaprio and a further example of his star power. He’s a special boy. Note also the direction from Fisher Stevens: more please, Mr. Stevens and soon..Michael Moore had better look to his laurels because there’s a new Documentary King in town.
