Scorsese back to his epic best with SILENCE Last Samurai meets The Mission via Star Wars with Liam Neeson Kylo Ren and Spider Man on religious adventure quest

by James Murphy

Silence Trailer is here. And it looks: DIVINE!

Finally we know why Liam Neeson lost all that weight! It was for a film role. Yes: sorry, tabloid press, he was not dying or ill or anorexic. Just an ACTOR. But unlike others, he tends to keep his method stuff secret. He even gained weight to play Schindler years ago but did not tell a soul. Tom Hanks lost loads and got an Oscar. Go figure.

Perhaps it’s Liam’s hour? Neeson stars as a mentor monk type in his best Qui Gonn / Ras Al Guhl mode. He gets captured in 17th century Japan and his two novices go into the rescue: cue Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver. So, it’s Star Wars (there is a nod, visually, as the two padawan types, in robes, face a sunset in concert) with realism.

Scorsese is THE best person to make this happen, as he was a founding partner of the ‘movie brat’ generation that gave us George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Francis Coppola and Brian DePalma. Note also, this IS a commercial prospect. Whilst worthy in tone and theme, it is clearly action packed and its imagery channels that of the Joseph Campbell Hero with a Thousand Faces generation.

So, whilst this will have the usual Scorsese grit and wit, expect this to also continue his turn towards more commercially accessible story telling, that began in his collaborations with Leo DiCaprio (Leo is not in this one but present in spirit; it even looks a bit like Revenant in places).

Expect a solid commercial hit with Oscar winning worthiness and historical /philosophical sensibility. If you enjoyed Last Samurai (Tom Cruise film, 2004, amazing) and The Mission (80s jungle based monks on a quest movie, featuring Liam Neeson himself in an early role and THE best film score from Ennio Morricone)..you will LOVE Silence.

One might also expect to see this consolidate further Andrew Garfield’s place as THE leading man to watch and very possibly the jewel in the British actor export crown. Move over, Cumberbatch and co: Garfield is the one to beat now. Between this and Hacksaw Ridge, turns out leaving Spider-Man might just have been the best thing that happened the kid! We will watch his career with great interest 😉

As an added bonus? How nice to see a positive film about the Catholic Church. Perhaps there will be a sudden rise in vocations as Priests start looking all kinds of kick ass cool again? Real life Jedi!

Movie-Viral will review Silence on the film’s release.
