Die Hard with a Podcast! PolitFlix ponders the Die Hard series past and future. Also: Lethal Weapon 5? Star Trek Discovery continues. Expendables. And all the usual film /political news and comment with Dave Bond, James Murphy and Frank Mengarelli

by James Murphy

So: Politflix is back! And is about to have a very good podcast.

Three men. One podcast. In a skyscraper? An Airport? New York? Russia? ALL those places and more. We look at the DIE HARD series. It’s a series of five films. Two are action classics. Two are undistinguished yet passable. One of the entries is awful. Bruce Willis stars as John McClane: a cop. In the wrong place at the wrong time, all the time. And he will be again, as Die Hard 6 is now in tentative pre production. As is Lethal Weapon 5, surprisingly. Who would win a fight between Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson? We discuss that issue, among others. But main focus is on Die Hard: the franchise, the films, the possibly political subtexts.

So: don that white vest / cardigan. Prepare to swear. Take on some terrorist baddies. Or just sit back, relax and listen. Audio quality: marginally better (we listened to feedback: getting there!). Informative, insightful, entertaining and a bit sweary..just like the Die Hard flicks!

Richard Gere, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford also considered.

Die Hard 2 (1990): Directed by Renny Harlin. Starring Bruce Willis, Bonnie Bedelia, William Sadler, Franco Nero. A cop goes to see his beloved wife at an Airport for Christmas. Ends up taking on an army of mercenaries and a drug baron. Trivia: the film is an adaptation of a novel: 58 Minutes, by Walter Wager.

Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995): Directed by John McTiernan. Starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson and Jeremy Irons. A cop sets out to bring in a Hacker for Police questioning and ends up taking on an army of mercenaries and a techno-terrorist. Trivia: Multiple scripts and storylines were considered before the adaptation of an article from Wired magazine was taken as the premise. We almost got: John McClane and son’s vacation interrupted by..terrorists. Also: a Tarantino pitch that was sadly never realised and a jungle based idea in the spirit of Deliverance

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013   Directed by John Moore. Starring Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch. A Cop..oh who cares? Its shit. Trivia: McClane’s police colleague at the firing range when the film begins played one of the kids in Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Die Hard 6 (title /release date tba): is thought to be part prequel, like the graphic novel, Die Hard: Year One. They just don’t get it, do they? 😉

Poliflix will return..with a vengeance 😉
