RED SPARROW: CLASSIFIED DEBRIEF
In one of those twists worthy of an espionage thriller..turns out I did ask Jennifer Lawrence a question at a live event, earlier this year. This is not a fair-weather bandwagon hopping wannabe activist. It’s a girl with heart, soul, warmth and wit who simply wants to learn as much as she can about a political process and nurture a thought process in her craft.
So, to mark the release of RED SPARROW..we recommend this archived video from TIMES TALKS, DC. It’s a fascinating insight to the politics of spying, the Cold War and the acting process going with that. And if you must fast forward to my question?? It’s at 1:18:51. Thanks so much to Jennifer and the other hosts.
The film itself is good but it’s brutal. This is not Atomic Blonde, mark 2. It’s just RED SPARROW! It’s own thing. Some movies are just tough to market but I suspect people thought they were getting some sort of cold war espionage thriller romance. And yes, you DO get that. But in a key of unremitting, rather adult, stern reality. So be prepared for a shock or two. It’s a rewarding, immersive and substantial experience. Jennifer is excellent, as always.
And yes, Marvel fans? RED SPARROW does set a KIND of precedent for your BLACK WIDOW movie that’s now good to go; though tones will have to be shifted, naturally, to fit comic book movie aesthetic /audience tastes. Meanwhile we await the final news of what Disney /Fox plan to do with Jennifer’s last stand as Raven in X MEN:DARK PHOENIX. Rumour has it that they simply do not want it released and that the budget invested will be written off, thereby making way for clean slate reboots, asap. Terrible shame if so and a waste of talent, as well as a slap in the face to Ms Lawrence, who was thought to be less than enthused about returning, when in fact, was one of the key players in ensuring the new director (Simon Kinberg) was made to feel at home. In any event, if the film had been canned? Why would IMAX bookings for next year be confirmed already? Sometimes a whisper goes too far. I look forward to seeing the film.
Meantime: enjoy RED SPARROW at home and the TIMES TALKS!
