STAR WARS: A NEW PLINKETT!
They were the ORIGINAL and BEST in viral video movie essay criticism via satirical character comedy. Mini movies: potted film schools via big laughs and genuine insight. The definitive view on the Star Wars prequels and many more. And RED LETTER MEDIA has returned to take on THE LAST JEDI.
It’s safe to say that many have copied the Mr Plinkett format and that some have succeeded where other fail, badly. What’s the formula? Why so hard to match? Well it’s a very specific art. You run through an entire franchise of films, almost shot by shot, highlighting flaws and providing self contained comedic entertainment and legitimate criticism. Watch Plinkett enough and you can decode the recipe.
The drawback is that the original template gets seen less on YouTube. The creators start to tire of the imitations depleting their own model of success, perhaps? RED LETTER MEDIA of course provide weekly content. But it’s Plinkett that made them. Shame to see him so infrequently. They have also modified the comedy, it seems. This is softer stuff and the criticism more balanced. But it’s still hilarious and brilliant.
And what of their target movie? Has my opinion changed? No. Plinkett simply confirms what was already clear. It’s fair to say that THE LAST JEDI itself is divisive as a film, in its ongoing reception among Star Wars fans. It is a worthy, inspired, philosophical and enjoyable product. But also slow, meandering, illogical, pretentious, dull, over-earnest, derivative and lacking in charisma or purpose.
It IS watchable: on repeat, even. Just skip the ‘yo moma’ jokes, the miscast / awkward / misplaced First Order personnel; the Snoke wannabe Emperor monologue; the failed attempt at integrating Physics /science/ Crimson Tide in space exposition and you actually have a perfectly fine, fun, forward looking Star Wars pic. Visually stunning. Hilarious in places. Honours the Arthurian lore at the heart of the franchise: inverting the Luke Skywalker legend whilst making VERY clear that this is simply ONE phase of his life and that better times past and indeed future remain in the character’s canon.
Luke is The King in a lull, post Grail quest but can STILL face Mordred and enjoy final triumphs before space-Avalon awaits? Mark Hamill is signed for Episode 9 (now shooting) so draw your conclusions. Meantime, in THE LAST JEDI: (now available on SKY MOVIES) Daisy Ridley lovely; Kelly adorable; Laura Dern alluringly elegant; Boyega brilliant; Driver owns the screen.
Anyway: enough about me. Sit back, relax and enjoy MR PLINKETT showing us all how video essays about film are done at their best..JUST as enjoyable as watching THE LAST JEDI , itself.
Keep it up, Red Letter Media. Thank you!
