It’s official! GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is arriving in 2020. Teaser trailer has been released. Jason Reitman is at the helm. Cue Internet going wild with nostalgia / anticipation..
A genuinely surprising, unforeseen move that could herald the return of guerilla and viral film-making/ marketing: a beloved franchise has kept its return super-secret until now. See the announcement trailer, below:
Now, I know y’all adore this idea. But..
It’s THIRTY years since Ghostbusters 2. Think about that for a second..
The reboot attempt in 2016 was, to my mind, maligned, needlessly. It had heart, warmth, wit and genuine laughs /scares whilst being a proper piece of popcorn entertainment. SUCH a shame nobody sees it the way I do.
Does that 2016 film now no longer exist?? confusing..#toosoon, etc
Yay! New blood, taking on old properties. Sure. Except..wake up! Jason Reitman is a..Reitman. Same way that Jonathan Kasdan is a..Kasdan. Are they talented, hard working etc? Sure! But this smacks of dynastic politics and is therefore neither truly original nor nostalgic but some awkward purgatory between.
Nobody wants to see batons being passed to a ‘new generation’ of Beta-males. Equally, the market for watching near 70 year old men climb stairs is..well..limited. These guys are NOT Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones ffs. If indeed, it is the ‘original’ team, reassembled..in which case..
WHY? Bill Murray persistently and wilfully stalled all /any attempts to make a third movie. What changed? And in the intervening time, Harold Ramis died (RIP). The volte face could of course bode well or ill but keep an open mind..Maybe it’s a take on Dan Ackroyd’s pitch of a few years back (Satan, working from a thinly disguised take on a kind of Trump Tower, and played by Alec Baldwin, is running New York as a kind of Hell 2). We might also get to see Murray playing a ghost as he pitched, thereby making his return more likely? Or we might see none of that. Bill is certainly on a roll now, just announcing his imminent reunion with Sofia ‘Lost in Translation’ Coppola on another project. What next: Groundhog WEEK? I’d watch it..I’m just not as keen on Ghostbusters 3. Sorry!
Everyone loves the original, right? Well, no. Sorry. Ghostbusters 1 and 2 are hilarious and give a novel take on the science of the supernatural. But their visuals owe much to the Raiders /Star Wars aesthetic; the dream team was of its time in comedy back then and the horror was pretty full on. So, perfectly possible to NOT ‘love’ the series, brand etc. And as for a character like Peter Venkman? Let’s just say that his morality would not be welcomed in today’s society (rightly so btw) and yet nobody wishes to see him watered down, either. Because he is funny. Maybe he is sent to Hell for all his bad behaviour and the new Busters must save him? Maybe he is even the BADDIE?!
Who ya gonna call? Movie-Viral!
