VR is Changing Entertainment. College Study is the Next Frontier..

by James Murphy

VR is THE answer to YOUR College Potential!

Everyone seemed scared by THAT clip this week of the show with the mom meeting her VR generated kid. But do not Panic! VR is NOT some dystopia in waiting..it is a VITAL tool in YOUR College studies. Lawnmower Man? Nah.

The benefits of using virtual reality in college

Introduction

The use of virtual reality in education has been a rising trend for a while now. At first, the equipment and software necessary to use VR technology for academic purposes were not as affordable as it is nowadays. However, because of the benefits that both students and universities experienced through the use of digital learning aids VR became quite an appealing tech for professors and students alike.

Still, there is a wide misconception that VR equipment and software are only intended for entertainment systems like video games and virtual roller-coaster rides. In this article, we’re going to list some of the major benefits of VR for college students.

Bringing the past to life

It’s often quite challenging for professors to explain how a medieval society functioned to students that spent their entire lives in urban 21-century communities. It’s even more difficult for kids to absorb and process this type of information, which is why a lot of students need thesis help when they are tasked with topics that they can’t relate to. This is where Virtual Reality gear can help because it allows you to immerse yourself and interact with the world that doesn’t exist anymore. Depending on the type of software VR technology offers students a chance to be more than just a visitor but take their part in a medieval story.

Explaining atoms and molecules

Not every educational institution has the funds for expensive lab equipment and high-performance microscopes that would allow seamless interaction with the matter on a molecular or subatomic level. Still, there are scientific breakthroughs that students shouldn’t miss out as they are part of their curriculum. With the help of VR technology, students can now watch atoms form molecules or assemble a DNA chain.

Our brains have a hard time figuring out irrational concepts which is why learning through observation is much easier. Virtual reality allows us to gaze the world that’s invisible to the naked eye and analyze processes that occur over a long period.

Virtual field trips

Just as we can walk around medieval castles that now lie in ruins, VR tech allows us to cross thousands of miles and visit places that we usually would not be able to survive. Imagine standing on the rim of an active volcano or swimming with the sharks to understand their daily routine. What about an expedition to the North Pole or hiking across Siberian iced planes? Appealing as these destinations sound, it’s unlikely that many students would sign up for such a field trip.

Furthermore, through virtual reality, students could visit distant places that would be too costly to experience in real life. Therefore, besides the safety factor, there is a clear economic value to use Virtual Reality in the classroom.

Personalized learning experience

Smart classrooms, VR education, and multiple eLearning software solutions provide college professors with the means to create a personalized learning experience for each student, depending on their needs. As more and more universities sign in foreign students and conduct international academic programs with kids from all over the world taking the same courses.

Now, instead of hiring extra staff to prepare learning materials in different languages and according to the individual needs of each student, professors could simply adjust VR software so everyone in the classroom would be able to understand and follow the course.

Virtual laboratories

Some of the more advanced chemistry experiments require special conditions and specialized safety measures that are not easy to obtain unless we’re talking about the most prestigious colleges with enormous funds. The same goes for biology students and their study of animal anatomy which often requires measures that not all students are comfortable with.

The benefits of Virtual Reality in the education of young scientists go beyond the financial factor. There’s also a higher self-confidence factor because the kids know they could restart the process if things go wrong.

Conclusion

Practical knowledge and first-hand experience are of utmost importance for college students because it transcends theoretical knowledge, and brings students in touch with their fields of interest.

As time goes by, VR technology is becoming more available to universities and it’s easier for software developers to create meaningful learning platforms. The list of benefits that come with VR technology is growing larger as new concepts unveil and tech becomes more affordable and easier to adopt. Who’s to say where it’s going to lead us in the future, but all of the evidence seems very encouraging.
