FirstShowing has found a website that looks to be part of a larger online promotion for a sci-fi film. Countdowns seem to be the trendy viral thing to do, as the site has a countdown to the displayed date of 10/10/10. With the omnious title “They’re Here”, this could get pretty interesting. Early last month, we told you about how Disney was looking cross-promote the upcoming Tron Legacy with their Disneyland California Adventure park via a nighttime show of some sort. Over a year ago, a mysterious website was found by Unfiction members called It Starts With The Flu. On the simple one-page site, a countdown has been running, with the time ending at midnight on the morning of September 8th, just over one week away. The question “Will You Survive?” is asked, and hidden at the bottom is “Daniel 12; 1-13″. What does it this all mean, and could it be a new ARG?

Last month we told you about Blake Bevin’s design for a auto-lacing shoe that was inspired by the Power Laces in Back to the Future II. After Nike filed a patent for something similar, Bevin went back and perfected his design, moving the bulky external servo to the heel to conceil it. The official website for David Fincher’s The Social Network started as just a teaser poster. On Monday, the website launched and debuted 46 new photos. Well, you have to give them credit for trying. Yesterday we reported that a movie theater in Ohio (and possibly others) seemed to be part of Disney’s viral marketing campaign for Tron Legacy. However, it turns out that Marcus Crosswoods Cinema had taken it upon themselves to set up their Encom-branded website and the QR Code display that lead people to it. Since it is unofficial, Disney has asked them to take it down. Read the statement on the now defunct site after the break.

The Weirton Daily Times (via Unfiction) has an interesting article about upcoming casting for the unnamed Paramount film being shot in the small town. Of course, we all know that any mention of a Paramount production in the West Virginia steel town (including one with the codename “Darlings“) is for J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg-produced Super 8. The Daily Times article discusses the film’s prep and search for extras.

We’ve been keeping tabs on talk that some of the Tron Legacy standees in movie theaters have QR codes alongside them. Now we have proof of at least one in Ohio, which leads to a cross-promotional website for that particular movie theater. It in, it says that Encom is sponsoring the theater, and the fictional game company is releasing Tron Legacy as a movie version of their game. There doesn’t seem to be more to it than that, but we’ll update if necessary. Read the official press release after the break.
