Movie Review: “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Lives Up To Its Subtitle

Editor’s Note: This article was originally published on Sunday, May 15th

With his charm and dashing good looks Johnny Depp has created a character that should go down in history for the pirate genre, and after two films that focused heavily on Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann we can finally come back to the character we all know and love. But Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides can get a bit convoluted and gets confused on whether or not to focus on the character that brought the Pirates franchise to where it is today. Hit the jump to read the full review. [Read more...]

“For Asgard!” A Review of Marvel’s “THOR”

Marvel Studios’ Thor is one epic journey that should not be taken by the faint of heart. Many people thought it couldn’t be done. They asked, “How are you gonna do Thor?” The comics are full of magic, myth and action; a challenge to put onto the screen. When it was announced that Kenneth Branagh would be directing, I was in doubt. Branagh, being a classically trained, Shakespearian actor wouldn’t know his way around a comic book movie! But you can’t knock it until you experience it and Thor…is one hell of an experience.

Movie Review: “Stake Land”

A while back we had mentioned a small, yet gruesome viral for the film Stake Land, and how much we loved it. What’s not to love about blood soaked viral at the time of its inception? I also pointed out how much of a fan I was of director Jim Mickle’s first film, Mulberry Street, as it changed the way of the zombie film, and in a very interesting way. So who’s to say I will feel the same way about his second major film? Keep reading to find out my thoughts on Stake Land. WARNING: Spoilers exist.

Movie Review: Disneynature’s “African Cats”

This Earth Day (April 22nd) will mark the third annual US release from Disneynature, a Walt Disney film label that produces exclusively nature documentaries. 2009 saw Earth, last year we got Oceans, and this Friday African Cats hits theaters. We’ve already told you about how getting involved and purchasing tickets can help the animals featured in the film and those like them, but even then, is it worth your money? Find out in my full review after the break.

Tron Vs. Tron Legacy: Which is the Better Film?

Tron

With the release of TRON: Legacy on Blu-Ray this past week (and the re-release of the original TRON from 1982 on the same day), fans of the cult Disney film-turned-blockbuster-success are jumping in joy to see both these films in HD for the first time. However, newcomers to the Tron franchise might not be as excited due to their lack of knowledge of what it’s about. With that in mind, allow me to compare the two films in detail as a way of explaining why this series is so famous. This article will be divided into three categories: Story, Visuals, and Music, with decisions made as to which of the two films does better in these areas. Without further ado, let’s dive into the Grid and take a look at Tron and Tron Legacy.

Hobo With A Shotgun Review: Bold and Stupid Become The Same

Hobo With A Shotgun is currently available for rental on demand a month before it’s release date in theaters May 9th, much like Monsters did last year. Like before, I rented the movie early on so I can save you the trouble of choosing between waiting for the theater release, renting it on demand, or not at all. Find out which is best for you after the break.

Movie Review: “Hanna”

A cold vast icy environment pans itself towards one of its inhabitants. A deer’s breath is clearly visible as it breathes through its nostrils and just like that it is struck down by an arrow. A female adolescent walks up to her target and says “I just missed your heart.” Director Joe Wright introduces us to Hanna (Saoirse Ronan), a stealthy and cunning 16 year-old teenager raised in the cold forests of Finland by her former CIA agent father Erik Heller (Eric Bana). Hanna doesn’t realize it but she is a secret government project, who has been trained in survival and fighting skills by Heller in order to protect her from Marissa Weigler (Cate Blanchett), a cold and ruthless CIA agent on the hunt for those who were connected to the young girl. “Sucker Punch” Review: Plenty of Punches Thrown, Mostly Air Hit

I’m split on director Zack Snyder, whose short but starry resume includes films I’ve liked (Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen), some I haven’t (300), and an upcoming one I pray he doesn’t mess up (Superman: Man of Steel). I was greatly anticipating his latest project Sucker Punch (out today in theaters and IMAX), as I thought it would give me closure on his ability to do the greatest superhero justice. Unfortunately, I came out of the theater just as divided as I came in.
