So yesterday was the Big Game. No matter if you love football or loathe it, the best part of every Super Bowl is the commercials. And every year, some of those commercials hit it out of the park and some just fizzle. Last night was no exception. We’ve put together a special Viral Video Round-Up showcasing some of the film and television spots from last night. Check them out after the break!

First up is Metlife Insurance’s ad featuring many classic cartoon characters including Scooby-Doo and Mystery, Inc., JabberJaw, He-Man and of course, the Peanuts gang.

Seinfeld went off the air fourteen years ago, so it was nice to see Jerry reunited with one of the most iconic characters from the series, The Soup Nazi, in this spot featuring the Acura NSX.

Act of Valor stars a group of active duty Navy SEALs in an “…unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking.” It’s a very interesting concept and the teaser was quite powerful.

We previously covered this spot, but here it is again. Matthew Broderick as himself, playing hookie from a shoot in this ad from Honda.

The Super Bowl may be over, but that won’t stop our responsible readers from drinking a few brews. So while the timing may be a tad bit off, we have a new look at some of the promotional material for Will Ferrell’s telenovela comedy Casa De Mi Padre. Yes the comedian is coming out with an all Spanish-language comedy, and if you have been keeping up with our Trailers Weekly, you know what you are getting yourselves into. Hit the jump to see the ad for Escorpion.

The ad doesn’t deliver the same comedic punch as the two trailers does, but there are a few moments that are chuckle worthy. Check it out below.

Casa De Mi Parde opens in theaters on March 16th, 2012.

Let’s cut to the chase. The FOX television series Terra Nova, which debuted last September with a 13 episode season, is expensive to produce. Each episode costs about $500,000 more a regular one hour drama, so the show really needed some good ratings to be brought back for a second season. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen, so the show is in jeopardy. Now star Jason O’Mara has an idea for fans to show their support for the prehistoric show. Find out what it is after the break.

The series, which counts Steven Spielberg as one of its executive producers, is about a family from the dystopian future of the year 2149 who join a colony of people who have gone back in time 85 million years to the Cretaceous Period. However, some people from 2149 aren’t looking to create a new civilization in this natural paradise, they just want to pilfer it for resources.

O’Mara plays Jim Shannon, father of the family and sheriff to the Colony. The actor took to Twitter to get fans to send in plastic toy dinosaurs to FOX Broadcasting if they want to see the show come back for a second season. He even tweeted out an Amazon link for those who can’t find any in their local stores. He posted where you can send the dinosaurs on his Facebook page.

If you want to address your package of little plastic dinosaurs to somebody at Fox, send them to president of the network. He’s a good guy so keep it friendly please.

Mr Kevin Reilly, Fox Broadcasting Co, PO BOX 900, Beverly Hills, CA 902130.

You can also support the cause by using the Twitter hashtag #saveterranova. I’ve seen a few “Save Terra Nova” Twitter accounts, but none have that much of a following. Instead, I suggest following the show itself on Twitter and Facebook. We’ve seen these kind of fan initiatives before with shows like Firefly, Jericho, and Flash Forward. Unfortunately, they rarely work, and even when they do, the show still doesn’t last very long.

While Terra Nova wasn’t perfect, I enjoyed it a lot. It was one of the few shows in the Fall that I actually kept up with. I hope to see a second season. What about you?

NBC’s Saturday Night Live had a new episode last night featuring Channing Tatum as host. There were plenty of TV and movie-related skits, so see them all after the break.

While I think the 1950s space movie theme worked well, SNL went a bit hard on Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich in the following sketch.

Editor’s Note: A new and rather popular fan-based ARG has cropped up for the BBC television show Sherlock. After the jump is an account of the ARG from one of those fans. Enjoy.

The BBC television series Sherlock is a modern day re-imagining of the adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective, created by Steven Moffat (current showrunner for Doctor Who) and Mark Gattiss (who costars as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft). The key elements of Doyle’s stories have remained intact; “the world’s only consulting detective” Sherlock Holmes still solves cases the police can’t with his observational skills, razor-sharp mind, and the assistance of loyal friend Dr. John Watson. But this Sherlock is as thoroughly modern as his inspiration was Victorian. He relies on nicotine patches instead of pipes, is an avid texter, while Dr. Watson is an Afghanistan war vet who relates the detective’s adventures via blogging.

Since its first series of three 90-minute episodes aired in July of 2010 (in the UK; November 2010 in the US), the show has garnered an international fanbase and critical acclaim (including two BAFTA awards), and was quickly picked up for a second season. However, due to demanding production values, a lead actor in production on a major motion picture, and a showrunner captaining another series simultaneously, there were a host of delays between Series 1 and 2. Fans were left waiting nearly a year and a half for the resolution of the cliffhanger. Via Tumblr, they filled the wait by creating their own shared history of inside jokes and memes.

SPOILERS BEYOND this point for Series 2, Episode 3: specific events in the show inspiring the creation of the campaign are intentionally NOT described, but some can be inferred.

Series 2 finally arrived in January of 2012 (UK). After the third and final episode aired, the fandom found itself facing another cliffhanger (of sorts) and another long hiatus, with new episodes planned for early 2013 at soonest. They took to the internet in droves immediately after the airing of “The Reichenbach Fall” (based on the Doyle story “The Final Problem”), an emotionally intense piece of television which inspired equally strong reactions. Among them, Tumblr user earlfoolish made a post “in character” for the story’s universe and then suggested the idea of a guerrilla campaign, inspired by a DIY marketing endeavor by artist Amanda Palmer and the 1950s “Frodo Lives!” campaign:

Imagine being a Sherlock fan in the show universe. You’ve been following John’s blog, stalking Sherlock a bit at crime scenes, try to be within earshot so you can hear him do his deductions. You’ve got cutouts from the papers. Then the news reach[es] you. What do you do?… I would like to propose [a] tribute campaign, to show our love and support. Yes, in real life. We put ourselves in the mindset of the in-show fans…

Earlfoolish suggested #believeinsherlock as a tag and encouraged fans to act “in character” as Sherlock’s supporters by posting up flyers, making t-shirts, and even writing on bathroom walls. The idea spread like wildfire; to date the posting has over 12,000 likes and reblogs on Tumblr.

In just over two weeks since the airing of the final episode of Series 2 on January 15, 2012 and the suggestion of a fan campaign, the response has been enthusiastic and widespread. The “Believe in Sherlock” movement encompasses a number of fan slogans which appear in varying iterations on flyers, homemade buttons, and t-shirts on sites like Red Bubble. Some participants refer to themselves as “Watson’s Warriors”. Flyers reading “Believe in Sherlock”, “Moriarty is real” and other slogans have been spotted not only in the UK but also in cities worldwide, including New York, Dallas, Rome, Marseille and Munich; and from the Czech Republic to Brazil. They’ve been posted outside the New York Stock Exchange and slipped inside copies of the Arthur Conan Doyle stories at libraries and bookstores. Many fan postings have been on college campuses, including my own sighting at the University of Florida near my home.

My photo of a large mural on the unofficial official student graffiti area known as "The Wall"; since painted over.

The most high-profile and meta location used so far is the exterior shooting location for the flat Holmes and Watson share in London. As part of “Operation 221B”, fan group The Baker Street Babes temporarily put up flyers and edited their photos to add the appropriate house number:

Then, on the anniversary of the fictional first meeting of Holmes and Watson a crowd of enthusiasts filled the sidewalk in front of “Speedy’s Sandwich Shop” (which exists in reality and in the show universe) holding “I believe in Sherlock” signs:

The media has just taken notice as well, lead by the British press and The Daily Leicester newspaper website, who’ve posted an article on the phenomenon.

If you’d like to learn more or participate in the movement yourself, the primary hub of activity is Tumblr, via the “Believe in Sherlock” tag and the Believe in Sherlock blog dedicated specifically to keeping up with the fan campaign. There are a variety of downloadable flyer designs for those who want an easy alternative to designing their own (or resorting to illegal graffiti). There is also a QR code that will display “I believe in Sherlock Holmes” for posting on or offline or adding to your designs. You can participate through Twitter by using the #BelieveInSherlock hashtag, or Facebook communities (the largest located here). Chuck Noblet has agreed to let us share one of his designs right here (two others are available on his Tumblr):

It’s worth noting that there’s something extra special about this campaign, whether you’re a fan of the show or not. The BBC has done some viral marketing for Sherlock, but limited in scope to the blog John uses to talk about his escapades with Sherlock . While guerrilla style marketing campaigns set in the alternate universe of the fictional work are not unheard of (e.g. 42E’s Flynn Lives ARG for Tron: Legacy), to my knowledge a campaign which is fan-initiated, designed, and executed is essentially unprecedented. To date, it’s not clear if the production or the BBC are even aware of it. Series 2 has yet to air in many countries, including the United States (it will be airing as part of Masterpiece Theater on PBS in May), so if the momentum keeps up, you’re likely to start spotting slogans in the wild in your area soon. I’m already participating with my own button and flyer designs and am excited to see where it goes from here. With easily a year to wait for the new series, this campaign is something to watch; the sky is the limit and all it takes is a handful of creative and dedicated fans to take it to the next level.

Universal Studios Hollywood doesn’t have that many rides, but they are looking to change that with “Transformers: The Ride 3D”, set to open in May of this year. To help promote the new ride, Universal Studios has created a viral website and social media game. Get the details after the break.

Go to PrepareForBattle.com to enlist via your Facbook account. Once you have signed up, you get a welcome video message from General Morshower (played by actor Glenn Morshower just like in the film series). Watch it below.

The goal is to increase your military ranking with points. The grand prize is a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood to be one of the first to ride the attraction, and there are prizes for the top 100 people, so if you stick with the game, there’s a good chance you can win at least a Transformers toy or something. You get points for recruiting others to the game and other tasks, so get started!

Try out the Prepare for Battle game, and let us know what you think of it in the comments below! Thanks to Steve Kidd for the heads up.

Trailers Weekly is a feature in which we bring you the most popular and talked about trailers of the week. Sharing trailers is a classic viral practice, and trailers are still the most mainstream way for people to learn about movies. We got the first trailer for God Bless America, The Cold Light of Day, Get the Gringo, The Hunger Games, and Bullhead. Hit the jump to see them all.

Bullhead
The editing and lack of dialogue makes for a very compelling and very powerful trailer for Bullhead. The movie is an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film, and its pretty easy to see why it earned a nomination. The tension that the lead character has is enough to grasp anyone’s attention and does not let go until you are blue in the face. Hopefully the movie will make the rounds to my area because I am very interested to see Mattias Schoenaerts. Bullhead comes from Beligum

God Bless America
This movie takes on crazy dark look at how America is consumed by the evils of kardashian like reality shows, as seen on tv products, and its obsession to be like high profiled celebrities. While it can look hilarious at first, you have to know it is going to be very violent, and it could be very offensive to some. So if you don’t appreciate this sort of material, I suggest you scroll down.

The Cold Light of Day
This looks like a fun popcorn actioner. It has Henry Cavill in yet another pre-Man of Steel role. Could it determine how he preforms as the famed Superman? Probably not, but it should be fun to see him play along side Bruce Willis in this espionage actioner.

Get the Gringo
After sitting on the shelf and collecting dust for two years, Mel Gilbson’s newest action comedy has come into the light, and it kind of makes me wish it had stayed on the shelf, or at least be thrown into a bunker of never to be released movies. It seems like Gibson is trying to relive his glory days, and this unfunny and unenthusastic trailer does cry watch me, it just makes me want to cry.

The Hunger Games
We’ve been extenisvely covering the viral for The Hunger Games ever since we saw thecapitol.pn site launch last year. We are just about two months away from the movie’s release, and I just can’t wait to see how Gary Ross as adapated the Suzanne Collins novel of the same name. Will it live up to readers and blogger’s expectations. We will just have to find out.

What did you think of this week’s trailers? Which was your favorite? Do you agree with the Internet buzz? Of course, every week there are a lot more trailers, teasers, TV spots, and clips that we can’t cover, so go to TrailerAddict.com to see your favorites. You can also download trailers in HD at Apple.com, or the new iTunes Movie Trailers App on your iPhone or iPad.

They say Chronicle is a rip off of Akira. I’ve never seen Akira, and chose not to, so I can come into this movie with a clean perspective and walk out with an idea of how Akira might be. After seeing this film, Akira must be f***ing awesome! Though, I doubt it had the deadliest filmmaker in the world. Read my review of Chronicle after the jump.

The story of Chronicle is simple: 3 teens get the power of telekinesis after finding a tunnel in the woods. Unfortunately, one of them turns dark and powerful, and only the other 2 friends can stop him. I’d expect it to be just plain stupid since I dislike high school movies and teen drama in general, but you know what? This movie is not stupid. At all. In fact, it is one of the more intelligent movies that is intense with it’s action as well. A movie about teens that is logical has been proven.

Oh I forgot to tell you: This is a found-footage film. A found-footage film that isn’t just from one camera all the time. The movie realizes that people do put the camera down because shit just got real and wouldn’t waste their time holding a camera up (I’m talking to you, Cloverfield). I don’t think any movie could sell you that but Chronicle did by using telekinetic cameras, security camera, pedestrians/tourists, etc. Not once did I question a camera angle or motive to film. In fact I rather liked the main character, Andrew, played by Dane Dehaan, because he is the most powerful cameraman in the world.

That’s not the only thing I liked about Andrew. Sympathetic villains are the best villains and Andrew is one you kind of want to win. His life was disturbed by constant abuse before he got his superpowers. By the time he goes to far, you don’t get angry at him but feel sorry for him. What better villain is there? Matt, the hero of the story, played by Alex Russell, isn’t even focused on that much. It’s a story that follows the villain in it’s majority of screen time. Matt wasn’t given that much character development. You didn’t really like him in the beginning because he was a douchebag, but he wasn’t an asshole. His growth wasn’t nearly as interesting as Andrew and his turn to the dark side.

But this movie isn’t perfect. While it was logical in everything they did and how it all played out, the fault is mainly in the special effects, which isn’t saying much. When they showcase the powers it doesn’t look all that convincing. If the point of your scene is to show how cool a power is, then you better amaze me and while it did do that, it fell short sometimes. It’s good enough but not great. However, these moments are few because the action scenes don’t give you time to declare “that looks so fake.” I’m sure if I look at it in slow motion it would look as mediocre as the other scenes but I just won’t give a damn. Steve, played by Micheal B. Jordan, was the middle man and I thought his character had a lot more potential than what they did with him. Also, the music was annoying, but I won’t put that in the mix because I just don’t like modern day music.

So in short: while the movie is brilliant, some flaws in special effects bring this movie down and weak characters here and there but really, that’s just nitpicking. It’s just not a perfect film, but it is the best Superhero movie ever made that does not originate from a comic book. Even if it did, it would give The Dark Knight a run for it’s money. The Avengers and TDKR, this is your competition. I’d give this a 4.9 our of 5 stars, but I’m forced to round it off and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

It has been quite some time since we’ve done one of these! “What If” has been absent for two years, so I feel honored to be able to revive the series. The What If series asks the question, “what if a movie that didn’t have a viral marketing campaign, had a viral marketing campaign?” And then we attempt to answer that question by creating a campaign for the featured movie. Hold on to your butts, because we’re going all the way back, 20 years ago, to 1992 and create a viral for Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park was based on the book of the same name by sci-fi thriller author Michael Crichton. Before the book was even published, studios entered a bidding war to acquire the screen rights. In 1990, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios won the rights and hired Crichton to adapt the film for an additional $500,000.

The film was regarded as a landmark in the use of CGI and is currently the 20th highest grossing film in history, as well as the most financially successful film for Universal and Spielberg. Jurassic Park also won 3 Academy Awards: Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. Two sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (Based on Michael Crichton’s book sequel) and Jurassic Park III, were made with a third rumored to be in development.

Stage 1: InGen Website

The viral campaign for Jurassic Park would begin in the of Fall 1992. Pretending that the internet was back then what it is today, players come across www.ingen.com. Here, you will read about the history of the company and its founder, John Hammond. You can also apply for a position at InGen, and in two week’s time, your application will be processed, and you can then proceed to create an ID badge (which will be mailed to you).

Stage 2: The Jurassic Park Project/Employees Only

There is an “Employees Only” section of the site that requires a password to access. This problem is solved when the ID badges arrive in a very official envelope. There is a letter from the head of human resources which states what job you have in the company (Geneticist), and also contains your login information for the InGen site. There are several official documents watermarked with red letters saying, TOP SECRET. Mostly unimportant information, but players will pick up on the names of two islands off of the coast of Costa Rica, Isla Nublar (Site A) and Isla Sorna (Site B). In these documents there is also mention of the Jurassic Park Project.

A welcome letter from John Hammond himself is also included in the pack which talks a little about the project and what you’ll be doing. After logging in to the site, you are instructed to familiarize yourself with the employee interface as this is where you will do most of your work.

On your interface desktop, you will find a folder labeled TOP SECRET. Opening it, you will discover a document titled “Jurassic Park Project”. After reading you will realize that you will be helping to make dinosaurs. The first <del datetime="2011-12-19T22:03:06+00:00">puzzle</del> assignment you will come across is recovering DNA from a mosquito trapped in amber. You control a robotic arm, by inputing command codes, that will drill into the amber to retrieve DNA. If you put in the wrong code, you could end up destroying your specimen. There are 10 levels, and each one is harder than the last. When you complete the assignment, you will receive achievement badges, “Extractor” for 5 levels and “Dino DNA” for completing all 10 levels.

Back on the home screen, you see several more assignments need to be completed, but only one is available; synthesizing the DNA you just recovered. Before you can proceed, a video clip plays that explains how InGen makes dinosaurs (see an abridged clip below):

Afterwards, you may start synthesizing the dinosaur DNA and filling in the missing code with frog DNA. After completing 10 levels you are awarded the badge “Baby Dinosaur”. If you complete all 25 you get the badge “Splice Master”. Now the rest of the jobs are available to do. Completing each will result in you receiving a badge and when all are done you are asked to verify your address. In a few weeks, you will receive a piece of amber with a fossilized mosquito in the mail.

Stage 3: Field Operations

Biosyn (www.biosyn.com), InGen’s rival company, plots to steal dinosaur embryos from the Jurassic Park Project. You are sent secret documents by an unknown source which mention a mole working for InGen as well as a meeting between the mole and Dr. Lewis Dodgson, Biosyn’s Head of Research. Your role in this has just changed from InGen geneticist to InGen spy. In cities around the world, certain players will participate in a dead drop experience in which they will have to hunt down possible moles in the company. Players will never encounter a mole, but they will uncover a Barbasol can that can be unscrewed. Inside, players will find 9 tiny vials with embryos. Embryos in the canister include:

Proceratosaurus

Gallimimus

Tyrannosaurus Rex

Velociraptor

Stegosaurus

Metriacanthosaurus

Triceratops

Brachiosaurus

Dilophosaurus

Players will also find an envelope with access codes for the BioSyn website and instructions.

Use your InGen employee interface username and password to log into the site below and enter the BioSyn access code, also found below.

After completing the task a message appears on the screen

Keep the embryos safe. InGen is going to continue to search for the mole, we think they may strike again.

Players who complete the dead drop get a “Field Work” badge.

For players who were not able to participate in the dead drop experience, the first teaser for the movie is released on the InGen employee interface once all of the codes from the field have been entered.
