Oscar Nominations Announced, Snubs Spark Online Outrage

The biggest award show in Hollywood is drawing closer, and we’ve taken the first big step this morning with the announcement of the nominees for the Academy Awards. Like usual, there are some surprising snubs, but none more so than Christopher Nolan not getting nominated for Best Director for Inception, despite the film lighting up the nomination boards, including Best Picture. With plenty of fanboys online, you know that the snub has sparked outrage most easily seen on Twitter and film blogs. Get the full list of nominees after the break.

Toy Story 3 Oscar Campaign Gets Noticed

Almost every film with a shot at an Oscar (and even some that don’t) starts a campaign around this time of year for their respective category. Usually they are simple and uninteresting, thus go unnoticed. However, Disney’s Best Picture campaign for Toy Story 3 is drawing attention for its unique take. Take a look at the ads for yourself after the break.

Piranha 3D Campaigns For An Oscar

One of the reasons that Piranha 3D has a special place in my heart is that it knows what kind of movie it is. It doesn’t try to be anything more than a silly, over-the-top, bottom of the barrel, horror film. The marketing so far has supported that, and it continues with their tongue and cheek “For Your Consideration” commercial, in which they vie for a Best Picture nomination from the Academy. Watch the funny video after the break.

We actually got wind of these statues last week thanks to The Wrap, but it didn’t really hit our radar until Dane Cook posted a TwitPic of him next to one of them. Check out the photos after the jump.

Stan Lee’s Oscar Campaign

There are currently a lot of categories in the Oscars and I suspect that a lot of the votes are pretty random rather than seriously considered. Do the Academy members actually watch all the short films? Do the Academy voters all know the difference between Sound Editing and Sound Mixing? I doubt it. I tend to speculate each year about whether they’ll add even more new categories and what they might be. Dustin Hoffman’s character in Wag the Dog laments the absence of an Oscar for Best Producer and I would actually like to see Stunt work included in the Oscars. Probably more likely for new Oscar categories are best use of CGI or perhaps even 3D.
