I was no fan of 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. That film setup plot elements that just disappeared, created confusing elements and just felt rushed. This time around, everyone is a little older and a little wiser. Would they learn from past mistakes and make a better sequel, or make another turd? Just when you thought Spider-Man’s (Andrew Garfield) problems couldn’t get any bigger, it does, and I don’t mean just the appearance of new villains, relationships, secrets, etc. The true villain of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 lies within the story itself, and it has become abundantly clear that trying to replicate the very successful Marvel Studios formula will ultimately end up with either a very generic replication or a very poor copy of the original formula. Despite the film taking the same missteps as before, director Marc Webb made the most of whatever sorry excuse of a script he was given, and used his awesome signature visuals to sweep the story under the rug. Since the New Year’s Eve TV spot debuted, the EnemiesUnite viral marketing site for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been hinting at a huge event which was to occur some time during the Super Bowl. Well it was hard to miss but the TV spot debut during the big game, and it was even harder to miss the Enemies Unite website that debut. The thing is, the trailer that premiered on the EnemiesUnite website is much much bigger than what was shown during the game. We all know that Sony is going to expand Spider-Man Cinematic Universe by making films for Venom and the Sinister Six, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 viral marketing campaign took an interesting turn today. While the latest blog entry on The Daily Bugle blog is yet another name drop, it could be an important one considering the villain was in one of the most famous story arcs in Spider-Man’s publication history.
The villain is none other than Professor Miles Warren, aka the Jackal. Making his first appearance in Spider-Man #31, Warren developed feelings for Gwen Stacy when she and Peter Parker visited Empire State University. A new update to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 viral site is giving us some very unsurprising news: Dr. Curt Connors is heading Rikers. In a new article posted on The Daily Bugle tumblr, the blog reveals that the former OsCorp geneticist was found guilty on all twenty counts including the murder of Captain George Stacy (who died in the first Amazing Spider-Man film). Like most of these posts, there are nods and references made to other characters in Spider-Man lore, so you will have to hit the jump to see who the viral site referenced this time. [Read more…]
The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s viral site, The Daily Bugle, has been making a few references to some of the major villains in Spider-Man’s rogue gallery. Shocker, the Enforcers, Hobgoblin, Venom, even She-Venom have all been mentioned or alluded to in the past few months via these faux articles. Some of these articles even bridge the gap between the first film and sequel.

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has always had to deal with a plethora of villains, enemies, and criminals. In the comics, six of the webslinger’s greatest villains banded together, and called themselves the Sinister Six. The roster may have changed, but their intentions didn’t.
Sony is hoping that it will all pay off in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The film has already teased three different villains in the first trailer, with two Easter eggs that hint at more possible appearances. But let’s just consider that Green Goblin (or some form of him played by Dane DeHaan), The Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and the film’s principle antagonist, Electro (Jamie Foxx), are the main villains. Now the site formally known as ElectroArrvies.com has been redirected to EnemiesUnite.com, adding more fuel to the fire that we will see the Sinister Six in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Aside from having a towering presence in Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man, OsCorp lacked its two of its most prolific characters: Norman and Harry Osborn. As the first film established, OsCorp doctors were working around the clock (and off the books) to find a cure for an ailing Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper), who was no where to be seen. The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has just been released, and already the viral site is making connections to it. While we don’t know the extent of BJ Novak‘s role in the sequel, rumors are swirling that it could be anyone from Donald Menken, Norman Osborn’s assistant, to Dr. Otto Octavious, better known as Dr. Octopus.
