Google Viral: The Wizard of Oz Anniversary

Every so often, Google likes to change their homepage logo to illustrate something timely. Often called a “Google Doodle”, it is usually done to commemorate a significant anniversary or holiday, and given how big Google is, it tends to get people talking. Often we find a way to tie in movies to the subject (see our Pi Day article for a great example of that). Fortunately, we don’t have to stretch the concept at all today, as Google celebrates the 71st anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.

Google Viral: Top 10 Independence Day Movies

Today, Google has continued its annual celebration of American Independence Day with an altered logo. Google’s latest doodle is interactive, as a click of the arrow causes a domino effect similar to a Rube Goldberg machine. In honor of the 4th of July, we celebrate the holiday with the top ten best movies that involve July 4th, politics, and other historic events in US history. We’ve even included clips for each to prove their significance. We didn’t include television, as everyone knows The West Wing trumps all. Enjoy.

Google Viral: Jacques-Yves Cousteau (and World Cup)

In what may be one of the more timely anniversaries to get a Google Doodle, today is the 100th birthday of Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-1997). Cousteau was a pioneer in marine research and preservation, so much so that Congress passed Resolution 518 “honoring the life of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, explorer, researcher, and pioneer in the field of marine conservation,” on June 8th. He also had a significant influence on film and television.
