Did you miss the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con? Did you also miss out on seeing the bootleg Thor compilation while it was up for a day? Would you still like to see the Captain America footage shown? Well, you’re in luck, as long as you are willing to plop down over $25.

According to Comic Book Movie, all the Marvel Studios footage shown at Comic-Con will be found on the Iron Man 2 Blu-Ray, set to be released September 28th. This will include the extended five minute Thor trailer, the Captain America costume test, and a Cap scene with Hugo Weaving trying to get the cosmic cube.

However, these clips will be hidden on the Blu-Ray, and you’ll have to unlock them from a “S.H.I.E.L.D. Data Vault”. There’s no word on whether the regular Iron Man 2 DVD will include the footage as well. What do you think about Marvel’s ploy? Will you buy Iron Man 2 just to see future Marvel film clips?

Apple’s “I’m a Mac….and I’m a PC” commercials have created many spoofs and copies, but none have been taken as far as YouTube user ItsJustSomeRandomGuy‘s “Hi, I’m a Marvel….and I’m a DC” series. The channel, which features ads, spin-offs, reviews, parodies, and more, has finally reached 100 videos. There’s no better way to celebrate 100 episodes than a musical, so turn up your speakers after the jump.

If you have no idea what these Marvel/DC videos are, here’s a quick summary: On a very basic animation level, backed up by great writing, is a world were all heroes from DC and Marvel interact to discuss and argue about their movies. Here’s the first spoof that was uploaded back in 2007, featuring Spider-Man and Superman discussing upcoming movies.

The channel has expanded to include several ads for C2E2, and is on its 3rd season in the Marvel/DC Hour series. Now he takes on the continuity and connections between the Marvel films, notably Thor’s Hammer cameo in Iron Man 2, and how Chris Evans plays Captain America and the Human Torch, in a musical that is almost an exact copy of “The Freakin FCC” from Family Guy but with appropriate lyrics.

Like I said before, it’s a great way to celebrate 100 episodes. And yes, Howard the Duck is as bad as the video implies.

Everyone knew Iron Man 2 would win out this weekend, but by how much? Would it do outpace the original (which some argued was better) or maybe even break The Dark Knight‘s record? The estimates are in, so see the full chart and find out after the break.

2008′s Iron Man made $98.6 million its first weekend, while that same year The Dark Knight set the weekend record with $158.4 million. This year, Iron Man 2 finished right in the middle with $133.6 million, giving it the 5th best opening ever. It’s Friday take of $52.3 million gave it the 7th best single day in box office history. Of course, these are estimates, so there could be some slight changes.

Either way, the much anticipated sequel is a success so far, with over $326 million in worldwide grosses. However, each day this weekend the tally dropped, as opposed to the original Iron Man, where Saturday made more than Friday. This could mean a more rapid drop next weekend, especially since the reviews were slightly below the original. Iron Man dropped 48.1% in its second week, and with a higher total to fall from, Iron Man 2 could drop close to 60%. Fortunately, there’s not much competition right now, with the only notable opening next weekend is Universal’s Robin Hood. Though the Ridley Scott film has a major star and a recognizable story, the buzz has been luke warm, and I wouldn’t be surprised if most people in their target demographic just go see Iron Man 2 again.

Here is the top 10 estimates for the weekend of May 7th:

1. Iron Man 2 – $134M
2. A Nightmare on Elm Street – $9.17M
3. How to Train Your Dragon – $6.76M
4. Date Night – $5.3M
5. The Back-up Plan – $4.34M
6. Furry Vengeance – $4M
7. Clash of the Titans – $2.31M
8. Death at a Funeral – $2.1M
9. The Losers – $1.8M
10. Babies – $1.58M

As you can tell, the description we provided yesterday is accurate. Along with some titles to explain the context (a section of Area 51 was shut down, things are being shipped to Ohio), we see a train roaring down the tracks, getting into a huge accident, and something tries to pound its way out of one of the cars. Then we end on the Super 8mm film camera. My first thought was “wow, this looks good”, and second thought was “Abrams wants us to think that’s an alien, but I bet it’s not.”

So, what do we know about Mr. Abrams’ secret project now? Let’s make a list of the key facts.

- Obviously, it’s titled Super 8, a reference to old film cameras that both Abrams and Steven Spielberg used to use as kids.
- This is the sci-fi film we learned Abrams and Spielberg were planning to team up on, and is intended to have a style similar to that of Spielberg’s 70s and 80s films.
- The plot (maybe): Set in 1979, a group of kids are playing around with a Super 8 camera and capture something bad on film. This has not been confirmed, but this is what is floating around. How it ties in with the teaser, I’m not sure. I would guess they got on camera whatever that was trying to get out of the train. This may take place in the midwest, since the train in the teaser was headed from Area 51 (in Nevada) to Ohio.
- This is NOT a Cloverfield prequel, sequel, spin-off, or anything else like that.
- The teaser was shot separately from the film, so don’t expect to see any of that kind of stuff in the film.
- J.J. Abrams is also both writing and directing, despite reports he would only produce.
- The budget of the movie is around $45-$50 million, and was filmed in a traditional manner (not “found footage” style as previously believed).
- The release date: Possibly May 27, 2011, since Paramount just moved Mission Impossible 4 from that date, and we know it comes out next summer.

Paramount has also launched an official site for Super 8, Super8-movie.com, though there’s no information on there yet, just a creepy close-up of a Super 8 camera. Obviously, there are still a lot more questions than answers regarding this project, and we’ll keep you up to date on it all. Once we get an official version of the trailer, we’ll break it down and see if there’s anything hidden in the dirty cuts.

Let’s see a show of hands. Who knew that Iron Man would turn into the hit that it was? Truth is, not many. Iron Man turned out to be a hugely unexpected success and was the 2nd highest grossing film of 2008 in the US. Everyone from the fans to the critics were taken by surprise, not least the studio, Paramount, who were quick to realise the success of the film and bankroll the sequel. So does Iron Man 2 have the metal to be as good as the highest grossing film of 2008, The Dark Knight?

Perhaps Iron Man’s success is the sequel’s downfall. The first film pleased almost everyone and the real Iron Man comic book fans warmed to director Jon Favreau in a big way. He took a gamble making the film the way he did. Casting Robert Downey Jr., an older actor with a torrid past, as the Billionaire playboy Tony Stark was viewed as a risky move. The Iron Man suit, unlike the caped crusader’s costume, was largely CGI based, which certainly worried people at the time (similar to the controversy surrounding Green Lantern’s rumored suit in the upcoming DC film). The biggest problem, though, was the pre-production hell that caused the film to be bandied about from studio to studio since 1990. Iron Man’s story could be a film in itself with the odds stacked against it, but it turned out the goods. This is why the sequel had a lot to live up-to, and in places it certainly achieved it.

Overall, and I’m not going to lie, the film a good popcorn movie, but it will disappoint fans of the original. This is not to say it is a bad movie, but it is definitely suffering from the sequel curse. In retrospect, maybe what made the first film good was following Tony Stark on the journey to becoming Iron Man. After all, it can’t be nice to suffer at the hands of your own weapons. I think that Favreau realised as well the emotional attachment you feel towards Stark whilst he is changing from war-monger to peace-keeper, and has decided to shoehorn in a subplot that tries to gain that attachment again, but ultimately fails.

When we are first reintroduced to Tony, he is that charismatic showman that we remember from the first film. Robert Downey Jr’s performance is pitch perfect as always, but secretly he is hiding issues that could spell the end for him and Iron Man. Throughout the first half of the film, we see him battling these problems, culminating in a stand-off that is one of the better scenes in the movie. However, this mid-point battle is also a turning point for the movie as it starts to lose its way slightly.

For the first hour I was glued to my seat. The action was there, the witty dialogue that Favreau is famous for was there, and it set the film up nicely. From the first high-octane over-the-top scene that marks the opening of Stark Expo, to the court room battle with Justin Hammer (played by staff favourite Sam Rockwell), everything is perfect. The constant back and forth that take place between Stark, Hammer, and Senator Stern (Gary Shandling) in the Supreme court hearing are excellent, and it sets up the film nicely for the first villain showdown with Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash in Monaco. Honestly, I defy anyone to sit in the cinema and feel bored, because it’s not going to happen. So how does it all go so wrong?

Well, there are many unnecessary things present in the movie, and this starts to weigh it down. As well as the character sub-plot I’ve mentioned, there is also a lot of lead up to the upcoming Avengers movie, so much so that every time you see it, your eyes will roll. There are also unnecessary characters in the film that are taking valuable screen time away from the real stars of this show, Downey, Rockwell, and Rourke.

As much as Scarlett Johansson brightens up the screen when she is on it, and has one of the better fights scenes in the film, her character, Black Widow, is criminally under-used. It’s frustrating because she is largely in the background of most scenes, making the whole introduction seem pointless. Faverou’s own character, Happy Hogan is also given more on screen-time as “comedy relief”, but he would have been better served behind the camera than in front of it. I have to state now that I am huge fan of Jon, counting Swingers as one of my favourite films, but his character adds nothing to the film. Paltrows character, Pepper Potts, was great in the first film: a strong female character who had a kind of Jackie Kennedy aura about her, but again her character just doesn’t seem to sit right this time around. This is not to say that Paltrow has done herself a disservice, because she puts in a strong performance, all the talent do, but the character itself is the issue.

The film sort of meanders along until the final action piece, which itself is pretty good, but there are certainly issues with it. The action before the final battle is good, and brings the film back to life, yet the final battle itself is lacking. The best way to describe this is to refer you to the robot fight scenes in Transformers. There’s a lot of action taking place, but it’s hard to figure out which robot is which, and the screen ends up looking like a big mash-up of colours. Iron Man and War Machine’s final stand-off against Whiplash’s army is very similar with it being almost impossible to differentiate between the good guys and the bad guys. At least the red and gold of Iron Man’s suit stand out more, but War Machine gets lost in whirlwind of grey. The final climatic scene is over far to quickly as well, and leaves you wondering if that is really it.

Overall, you will enjoy Iron Man 2, but those expecting it to be as good as the first will be disappointed. I would recommend you go see it, but maybe take a book for the boring middle section.

Final Grade: C

Yesterday we reported that a secret teaser trailer would premiere before Iron Man 2 this weekend. There are very few details on the J.J. Abrams-produced movie, currently titled Super 8, but we know that the trailer itself is being directed by Abrams. There was speculation, and even a timid confirmation, that the movie would be connected to Cloverfield. It turns out that is not the case, as you’ll find out when you hit the jump.

Vulture, who broke the story that Super 8 is “absolutely connected to 2008′s Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel)”, actually caught up with Abrams at the 2010 Time 100 Gala and asked him about the rumor. Here is what he had to say.

“You have to check [out the trailer],” he told us. “But it has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting.” So what does it have to do with? “I won’t be able to tell you until it’s done,” he said.

This is definitely a stab in the heart of us Clovey enthusiasts, but I’m still excited to see what this mystery movie is. How about you?

Earlier today, it was announced that J.J. Abrams was going to attach a trailer to Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2. This morning we got word that a new trailer for a currently unknown movie will be shown with Iron Man 2 at its midnight showings across the United States. Iron Man 2 has already earned over $100 million at the box office across the seas, but no word about this new mysterious trailer from J.J Abrams has been mentioned until earlier this morning, so the trailer itself is seemingly only being released in the United States. Many people speculate and hope that it’s the much anticipated Cloverfield sequel, due to the same unique style of the original teaser trailer for Cloverfield released in front of Transformers back in 2007.

Thanks to Slashfilm, some very minor light was shed on the mystery surrounding this new Abrams project was revealed today. Super 8 is the title of this new movie, and it adds to the speculation that this movie is a Cloverfield sequel or prequel. Thanks to a MovieViral forum member, here’s the reasoning:

That and all we know is Abrams is directing the trailer not the movie (Like Cloverfield) and Super 8 was a film format that was 8 mm wide. And Kodak released a Super 8 hand held camera system.. Another hint at Cloverfield. Hmmm

Sadly however, I personally don’t see Super 8 being the Cloverfield sequel everybody wants, mostly because Matt Reeves is working on Let Me In, the adaptation of Let The Right One In, and J.J Abrams is busy with 500 Rads and Star Trek 2. This movie already has “word-of-mouth” viral written all over it, and that will spread rapidly once the teaser is shown in front of Iron Man 2 this Friday, May 7th. Do you think this is for J.J Abrams and Matt Reeves’ anticipated-but-not-confirmed Cloverfield sequel, or an entirely new project from J.J Abrams? Leave your feedback and comments below. I know I for one am going to be following this as it develops down the road!

In other J.J. Abrams news, his spy show Undercovers has been picked up by NBC. We’ll be looking forward to that this Fall.

UPDATE: New York Magazine claims to have a source that knows the trailer’s content. Here’s what they learned:

Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame. Our sources also say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008′s Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel).

Whether this is accurate or not remains to be seen, but we’ll know soon enough.
