Duncan Jones’ Moon is a pyschological thriller that combines the creepiness and quiet of both space and loneliness. The music composed by Clint Mansell fits the 2009 film beautifully, and now “remixist” Max Tannone has done his thing to the score, along with some bits of dialogue from the movie’s lead Sam Rockwell. It’s almost upon us. The awards show that the world looks forward to the most, The Oscars, will take place in just under 2 weeks time. Along with the Screen Actors Guild’s Awards, The BAFTA Awards have log been seen as a precursor to the way in which The Oscars nod will go. Held last night, the BAFTAs nominated Avatar for 8 awards including Best Film and underdog favorite Moon, which had it’s own viral campaign to be included in The Oscars, was nominated for 2 awards.

This is it! The biggest awards show in Hollywood has released their nominations today and as expected, Avatar has been well represented in the categories. Perhaps the biggest news is that Avatar will NOT be able to steal the crown from Jackson’s masterpiece Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, the epic Ben-Hur and Cameron’s own Titanic. Each film won 11 Oscars and hold the joint record of most Oscars awarded. Avatar and The Hurt Locker (directed by Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow) both lead the pack this year with 9 nominations each.

While Sony Pictures isn’t doing much to support it’s limited release Moon in the year’s biggest award show, The Academy Awards, there is already a groundswell of support from fans, as we reported earlier in the month. Most of the focus has been on getting the star, Sam Rockwell, a nod for Best Actor.
Well now it seems to be a full-blown movement, with complete websites dedicated to the cause, including one called ManMadeMovies, where you can follow the people’s struggle to get Rockwell his nomination. Whether these ground-up efforts make any dent in Academy voters’ minds remains to be seen. Nomination ballots are due on January 22nd, and the final nominations are announced February 2nd. We’ll see if Rockwell and Moon have a happy Groundhogs Day.

OK, so maybe that title is better reserved for AFTER the Academy Award nominations are announced in a month (February 2nd), but the outcome seems inevitable, or is it? For those unaware of the independent film Moon that was released this summer in limited release, its a film directed by Duncan Jones (David Bowie’s son), and starring Sam Rockwell. Rockwell’s character Sam (very original) is near the end of his three year solo lunar mission, and some strange things start to happen.
