How to Ruin a Viral: Make It “Official”

What’s the best way to ruin a really cool viral campaign for a film? Slap the film’s logo on an in-world site. While 2008 was a year of intricate ARGs that had us guessing until the end if the studio was really behind it, 2009 brings us “The District 9 Experience”, brought to you by Sony Pictures (TM).

This Week In Viral: Terminator Viral Ends?

Terminator Salvation opened this weekend, and thus another viral ends. Or does it? One of the challenges of covering viral campaigns is knowing when they really end. Usually it’s the weekend, if not the day, the movie opens in theaters. However, even if the main viral campaign ends, tidbits of it may linger for months (see: Cloverfield), usually in anticipation of the DVD release or even a sequel. Also, the websites created for these campaigns seem to last far beyond the movie’s opening, so anything’s possible.

Judgement Day Is Here

Well, technically Judgement Day was in 2004, according to the Terminator universe, but today is the day Terminator Salvation is released in the United States, so most if not all of the ARG should be wrapping up. Proof of that is the current state of Skynet’s website, shows a big red “…Recalculating…” on each page. The guys over at Resistorbeterminated.com seem to think this means they’ve won with their hacking efforts, but as we all know, they are sadly wrong.

This Week In Viral – Star Trek Dance Party Edition

Good news and bad news. Good news: Star Trek viral is back in action. Bad news: It’s in the form of dance parties. A few weeks ago, Trek Movie reported on an event at the Hollywood club LAX. However, it wasn’t just any party. One of the photos show a website written on the wall behind a party-goer:

The site, http://01001111.com, is a flash animation of static with quick flashes of images and writing. Check out Trek Movie for all the photos and analysis. There are other foreign sites written on walls at the party with similar, yet longer, binary codes as the address. These sites have similar content, and after much research, this is Trek Movie’s conclusion:

So for now it looks like the solution is to visit http://97.74.158.186/ on Friday April 17th. Unclear what the ‘VI’ clue leads to. That may be a code used for the site, or maybe it means 6 AM (or PM).

So stay tuned! More viral news after the jump.
