The Super 8 viral campaign and ARG has come to an end as the movie enters its second weekend in theaters, and now it is time to look back and try to make sense of it all. For many of our readers, you may know that the viral campaign for the J.J. Abrams-produced Cloverfield was the seed that started MovieViral, but this was the first Bad Robot film campaign we’ve had the oppurtunity to cover in full (we were only able to partially cover Star Trek). Tomorrow we’ll have our extensive recap and review of the Super 8 viral campaign, but before we can do that, there’s one more update to give. When we last left Josh Minker, son of alien liberator Dr. Woodward, he had possession of a testing device seen in the S8 Editing Room video. Sarah was helping him find his dad, but she was kidnapped and held for ransom by the unknown group (probably a secret division of the government) in exchange for the device. Now we know her fate and what Josh’s dad was really hiding.

As part of the viral campaign for Super 8, the website S8EditingRoom.com has slowly been revealing a film reel that shows the film’s monster and its technology being tested on. Now the reel is complete, and we get some great details from the spoiler-heavy video, and if you watch Super 8, you’ll see how this documentary plays a role in the storyline. This weekend, a film called Super 8 opens in theaters and IMAX. If you’ve followed our website at all, then you know that we’ve been covering the viral campaign extensively for the J.J. Abrams written and directed sci-fi film. Now the time has come to see if the movie lives up to the impressive ARG. Read our spoiler-free review after the break.
The sci film Super 8, which we’ve been covering extensively, is directed and written by J.J. Abrams. From watching the trailers and clips, it’s pretty clear that Abrams is paying homage to his idol Steven Spielberg, who is a producer on the film. The film has the feel of Spielberg’s old Amblin Entertainment movies like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In fact, Spielberg has lent the Amblin name to the film, and Abrams himself has admitted that Super 8 is partially a love letter to the Spielberg films he grew up on. The newest poster for Super 8 plays up the Spielberg homage by mimicking the classic hand drawn posters of his 70s and 80s films. Take a look for yourself after the break.
Last Thursday, a new viral website popped up for J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi film Super 8 that begged the question, “What is the #Super8Secret?” With the film already shrouded in mystery, this seems like an odd addition to the viral campaign, but we waited impatiently until the secret was rumored to be revealed today at Noon Pacific time. Fortunately, that rumor was true.

Briefly: We gave you a quick report on Thursday about a mysterious new viral site for the upcoming J.J. Abrams sci-fi thriller, Super 8. A couple of developments have been made in the story. First, a date and time have been set for the “Super 8 Secret” to be revealed (via /Film). You’ll want to check out the viral site at Noon PST on Tuesday (6/7). The next development is comes from the site itself. Now when you access the site and wait a few seconds, the question “What Is The #Super8Secret?” fades away and is replaced with a new hashtag: #MINT. We’ll find out what this all means on Tuesday. in the meantime, be sure to check for more updates right here and on our Twitter feed @MovieViral!
