PASSENGERS AND FIFTY SHADES DARKER TRAILERS ARE HERE!
And they are really rather good. Seriously. Good work. You can be as skeptical as you like but the fact is that we still love to just watch beautiful movie stars, being well…beautiful. Does that always make for a substantial and innovative piece of realistic drama? Of course not. But does that really matter? Of course it doesn’t.
We have to be able to use cinema as a vicarious escape, whereby we can simulate adventurous and glamorous romances with our more handsome counterparts. Lose that sheer joy and we may as well abandon the visual art form altogether.
So it is that I welcome the trailers for FIFTY SHADES DARKER and PASSENGERS. Both give idealised and glossily filtered images of romance, sensuality and male /female dynamics in worlds both sci-fi and melodramatic. Fifty Shades of course has the whole BDSM angle that many rightly loathe. I ‘get’ that.
But new Director JAMES FOLEY appears to have introduced a dimension of the thriller to this one; it’s very EYES WIDE SHUT? Plus, aside from the ‘sex stuff’, the books fetishize the details of being a billionaire and the movies provide a similar platform, akin to the Thomas Crown films. Plus, DAKAOTA JOHNSON and KIM BASINGER are in the film and are lovely. Case closed. Top trailer. Literally..it got more hits than FORCE AWAKENS’ trailer.
PASSENGERS gives us our annual ‘space’ film and in a similar slot to that inhabited in recently previous years by the likes of THE MARTIAN, INTERSTELLAR and GRAVITY. It should hit big, given the pairing of CHRIS PRATT and JENNIFER LAWRENCE. Pratt is now a top leading man and I like him enormously, though do sense an indecent haste in his anointment as some sub for a young HARRISON FORD.
As for Jennifer? Dear, dear, beautiful JENNIFER LAWRENCE. What can I say? She is adorable. I could write entire odes and essays about her general loveliness, talent and inspirational star power plus sex appeal. But instead I will just endorse the new trailer for PASSENGERS and look forward to seeing the film.
So..FIFTY SHADES DARKER and PASSENGERS. Good trailers.
Watch now. You’re welcome! We look forward to reviewing both films on their release..
