AVENGERS: ENDGAME has a first trailer.
I am a man of few words, as you know. So I will just let the trailer speak for itself!
Having said that??
LOVE love LOVE the Tony Stark stuff: the journey to this whole universe started with him so it is apt that its final stakes should rest with his viewpoint. ADORE his words to the beloved Pepper Potts. For a million reasons I cannot quite articulate.
Downey at his best, as always: in one shot, encapsulates an entire character arc; giving reality to a fantastical world, just as he did from the start of these Marvel movies.
The aesthetic here is very real, raw, rugged. Gone are the comic book glowing colours and sense of awe and wonder. This is a weathered, maturing bunch of heroes who feel the weight of time upon them. It’s a metaphor for the march of years in the franchise; a changing of guard perhaps, as actors move along yet the brand can still be depended upon for escapist entertainment. And also? A quite literal sense that time is a key motif in striking back against the baddie, Thanos. Might time travel be a factor? Possibly..
There is an element of filler / recap and telling us what we already know, akin to fan-fiction trailers. But that’s to be expected, given this is just a first, not to say ‘teaser’ trailer. Like a ‘previously..on’ with tv shows or a cliffhanger ending that is resolved but only after some time to meditate on its impact.
No sign of the Guardians of the Galaxy? But quick shot of Peter Parker /Spider-Man on a wall-screen (does this confirm ‘Far From Home’ as prequel?? Time will tell!).
Thor has never looked so human yet also still, heroic and cool. Chris Hemsworth continues to fill the screen as a great leading man.
There is some note of hope, of course and even a nod to comedy / light relief, from Ant-Man. Jeremy Renner also turns up though looking less like the Barton/Hawkeye and more like a Ronin crossed with a British squaddie?
It’s all very exciting stuff. We will get to see consequences, stakes and a world adjusting to losing half its population; but there is also a sense that the action will take off quickly and that there is a clear and linear plot at work here that continues the work of INFINITY WAR, whilst existing as a self contained fun movie for all.
We look forward to seeing this in 2019.
