At Movie Viral we like to honour our favourite peoples’ birthdays. So many happy re-runs to one of THE greatest actors of all time..the man who brought TONY STARK alive onscreen..
(have you guessed yet? no? drat..ok..will spell it out..)
Happy Birthday to one of my most favouritest actors, ever: Robert Downey, Junior.
Why does he get special birthday editorial treatment? Well..let me list the rationale. In case any trolls are already at keyboards singling out other actors I have neglected /offended / failed to revere with equal diligence /deference etc. Also..coz it’s fun and easy to write a fast piece about an artist whose work one always enjoys, effortlessly so..
Tony Stark/Pepper Potts scenes are life enriching fun. Chaplin remains one of the finest screen performances ever: Downey is actually funnier than the actual Charlie Chaplin in that film, whilst still capturing the requisite tragedy, pathos, history and subtleties.
And the RDJ Sherlock Holmes makes that character somehow more likeable and accessible. Singing Detective: moving stuff. Tropic Thunder: hilarious. Versatile. Genius! I could go on but we’d be here all day and then it’d be your next birthday by then. Let’s not give him a swelled head through sycophancy. Tempting though that might be.
Long and short of it is..you belong in that pantheon of amazing actors: Thespus, Garrick, Olivier, Brando, Nicholson, DeNiro/Pacino/Duvall et al.
And you’re just hitting your stride! Seriously, post Marvel (though let’s hope you stay on, even in Stan Lee like cameos before deciding on returning fully for an Iron Man 4?)..you can do ANYTHING! Experimental. Arthouse. Villainous. Gritty. Shakespearean. More action, maybe (Harrison Ford had a kind of second wind round about this age..having sworn off jumping from explosions onscreen..we got Clear and Present Danger /Air Force One: not a bad precedent).
Oh and go grab that OSCAR. Seriously, whatever you have to do, including playing terminally ill / evil/ actual live historical person with controversial debate surrounding their legacy in 3 hour worthy biopic. Ask your old mentor, Mel Gibson: he knows how to win awards and direct first rate epic Cinema plus he’d love to see his protégé win big. You have real, raw, inspired TALENT. Let’s put it on an engraved gold statue, soon.
Meantime? AVENGERS: ENDGAME. DR DOLITTLE. SHERLOCK HOLMES 3. PERRY MASON / IRONSIDE revival (?). We await them all, with great interest. And that’s just for the always entertaining publicity interviews! There is something familiar about your stream of consciousness verbosity and loquacity: very Irish? Always worth watching. GREAT singer, too!
Above all? This is just a rather decent person: honest about their flaws, unashamed in enjoying their strengths and talents but never one to dwell self indulgently on the nauseating confessional by which so many lesser Celebs are defined. There’s zero pretension here. No sanctimony. The work speaks for itself. It’s called being a..MOVIE STAR..and it just so happens that, in this case, a damned fine actor comes as part of the package, too.
Have a great day, Mr Stark. The best is yet to come! God Bless the WORK! WHAT I’M SAYING, IF I’M SAYING ANYTHING IS…HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🙂
