Marvel has touched many a genre. Now is the time for their first spoof. And so it seems, with BLACK WIDOW?
So, um, where to start with this? Scarlett is in it. We love her. I love her. Just never bought her as Russian spy assassin athlete hence my seeing this uncalled for spinoff as some sort of comedic endeavour.
This seems to a kind of prequel to the events of Infinity War / Endgame? Post Civil War. Black Widow on the run? William Hurt is in it, maybe as the antagonist but not full baddie. I know they say they were inspired by The Fugitive (itself, soon to be needlessly remade). But they forgot that a movie of that calibre was founded on innovation: Harrison Ford being challenged by a then veteran yet pre blockbuster stardom, Tommy Lee Jones, backed by kinetic editing and novel action beats.
This film, by contrast? Looks cut and paste from any other Marvel / mid road action movie. And it’s littered with nauseating one liners and terribly contrived Eastern European accents, all set to a grey and bleak designer poverty aesthetic.
So yeah, sure: Girl Power! Post Tony Stark we do not in any way need Iron Man at all (bollox) Marvel Cinematic Universe! And it is just a trailer. And I should not judge and it will no doubt gross BILLIONS.
Judge not lest ye be..etc. But watch for yourself. And disengage brain, maturity and any recollection of the past 30 years of Cinema, political progress and stuff like that. ‘Enjoy’.
